He every one new to this site and land rovers and in need off some help I borrowed my mother's 03 defender 110 td5 started no problem as all ways drove down road pulled up at junction went to set off there was a loud bang then there was no drive at all so I pulled up left it running and looked under neath it and the rear prop shaft was turning slowly on its own and I don't have a clue it is doing that still selects gears fine clutch feels good still any help would be really appreciated still a learner lol thanks in advance

Sounds a bit like difflock was already engaged ... so very likely half-shaft/cdl/diff parts broken ...

hi yes I forgot to say I'm reading all the post's I can see when I selected different lock it went to move but sounded awful like cogs grinding I'll followed the hynes manual today drained rear diff and pulled rear half shafts and they are intact nothing broke

It's 'Differential' Lock, it selects the centre diff lock in the transfer box which connects the front and rear axles when on slippery surfaces. If you run it in diff lock on road there is a build up of forces that WILL break something in the drive train ...

If the prop was turning it smoothly it's unlikely to be the transfer box, but not impossible, so I'd pull the diff and check the pinion/crown wheel for missing gear teeth/anything broken like the sungears/cage etc ..

What I mean is, is that you are not on the side of the road, you have had time to take the motor somewhere safe and start to investigate the problem.

Cheers
Ah sorry yes I got it towed home by a seat leon which was a surprise to me

Do you have access to the following.

Axle stands, PLUS good solid level ground to use?

Are you sure it is the rear end?

If you stick it up on axle stands and try turning a wheel by hand you may find the nasty sounds easier.

Cheers

no were it's parked up is slightly down hill was hard to get parked up and no dont really no which has gone into just assumed it was rear as when it happened I jumped out and rear prop was turning slowly when my lift came he was looking underneath it i selected 1st foot off clutch slowly and he said the rear shaft turned he never looked at front probably but still no drive I'll check front half shafts tomorrow

Check the drive members first (unlikely - but you will kick yourself if it is), thats the bit on the end of the half shaft that drives the wheels, if the splines are gone you will lose drive.

I'll check fronts in the morning had rears off they are OK cheers

Hi all I have taken rear diff out what a nightmare 1 bolt would not come out just turning I finally got it and checked diff over it looked fine no metal filings at all now chunks missing from the cogs so I put everything back together and thought I would try it again selected a gear and it drove off fine so now I was a bit puzzled next thing was I tipexd the ends off rear half shaft and drive flange I sort off dropped the clutch and the half shaft skipped a tooth so that's my problem shafts and drive flanges any one no were i can buy them from cheers everyone for all your input

Bearmach: https://bearmach.com/ or Paddocks:. http://www.paddockspares.com/parts-and-accessories/land-rover-defender/axle.html
I find Bearmach are slightly more expensive but normally a better quality. When buying from Paddocks I normally try to avoid there items in the blue boxes . Some are OK some can be a bit cheep and not so cheerful. Having said that I purchased two new rear half shafts about two years ago and they are still fine. To test which half shaft is gone. Jack the vehicle up. Engage diff lock then turn each one of the road wheels in turn. The one that turns is probably the shaft that has gone. I think that is correct. Some one will soon come on here and correct me if I'm wrong.
Good luck.
