hey all,

i'm following a guide from this site on how to change the clutch on my 05 td5 110.

there is one part that i'm slightly stuck on, this being the removal of the fan. the guide simply says to remove it but gives no further information on how to this other than i may have to make my own tool to do the job.

i'm assuming there is a nut in the middle of the fan behind the rubber bit in the middle. is it simply a matter pulling out the rubber bung and undoing the nut?

any help you can provide would be most helpful and much appreciated.

Hi Alpine
Go to halfords buy a viscus spanner, put it on the big nut at the rear of the fan and shock hit the spanner anti clockwise check after every hit to see if it has come loose, when it does wind off by hand carefull not to drop it into the rad easily done.
Once it is off make sure you stand it up not lay down, hope this helps.

I use a slim adjustable spanner. Normal thread on the TD5 left loosey righty tighty. As said just give it a sharp tap with a hammer then unscrew the fan by hand taking care not to damage the radiator fins (although I guess if you are taking the engine out to do the clutch the radiator will already be removed). I slide a piece of thick card between the radiator and the fan to prevent fin damage. When you refit it use a smear of copper grease then it will come off nice and easy next time.

Thanks for the replys guys!!

So there is simply a nut between the fan the pulley and i have to shock that lose? Cool doesn't sound too hard. I like the card idea to protect the rad too!

I'm not taking the engine out to do the clutch but it (engine) has to be tilted backwards to get the box and TF box off, at this point the fan will foul the rad so i need to remove it.

Thanks again for the help!

p.s. Doh! just noticed I got my typo'd my username, what a fool.

well i never did manage to get the fan off. thumping the hammer for ages with someone else blocking the pulley. gave up in the end and just kept an eye on the clearances when tilting the gearbox down for removal. even at the steepest angle the fan was still 2cm clear of the rad.

thanks for the help anyway!
