Having read the threads in the search area I've decided to remove the boge unit (not convinced that it is working properly) and replace the suspension all round (it was picked up on the MOT today as it is very rusty) with standard height and not HD.

Questions:

Which kit do you recommend?
How long does it take to change?
Which tools are needed?
Once the boge unit is off does anything need altering around the A frame?
Whilst the suspension is off is it worth replacing anything else?

110 csw
Used for lots of camping trips and some moderate green laning. Only ever tow in emergencies.

Thanks in advance..........

bearmach springs
terrafirma shocks
OE rubber bushes

to fit springs and shocks all round will take about a day -I did mine in that time without any rush or real stressing, and had time to clean and paint the bit of chassis you cant normally reach.

to do the bushes is a bit more involved, you'll need to strip the bits off and either cut out or ask your local garage nicely to get them to press out the old ones - lots of advice on here how to deal with this. I would stick to using the OE rubber bushes as theres lots of variation and differing opinions on the use of PU, just remember that it likely that yours is still on the originals and how old are they?
as for tools good strong axle stands and a decent jack are the minimum you need. probably an angle grinder for some of the more reluctant bolts - i had to cut the front spring off to get at the shock inside - which then needed cutting off.

also make sure you have new turret rings and other fasteners, as most will be rusted up and likely fail during strip down.

saying all that - its not a particularly difficult job, just heavy and dirty.

If you do go poly bush then bearmach blue are good and last well. The good thing about 90/110 suspension bushes is they are all in parts that can be removed from the vehicle to do the job, but not all at the same time.

Don't polybush, just get standard rubber bushes put back in so much smoother.

Standard rated suspension will be fine LR's are designed to carry stuff and tow so sounds like no need gor HD yoyll be shocked how much difference new makes, you can go to air shocks if you like but new standard are preety good anyway.

I usually just cuf the bolts they almost always need it ajyway, youll need a pair of good long grips to hold the shocks to tighten the rubbers fully.

Blue polybush isn't far off rubber tbh and a hell of a lot easier to change out in the future.

Personally I went with soft springs in the back of the 110 (CSW spec), with air helper springs for heavy loads.

Keeps the ride plush when not towing/transporting heavy items.

I did my suspension change on my driveway. It was a bit of a pain without a lift I have to admit but it's doable. Make sure you prime the shocks and have a lot of patience if the nuts holding the shocks on are a bit rusty :D

I have Polybush on my 90 (put on by the previous owner) and are the yellow (might be different now it was done years ago) but they seem to be holding up just fine to anything I've done. As for changes in the ride, I couldn't comment however my ride without a load is quite firm with standard LR springs and Terrafirma dampers.

Polybushes may be easier to change but they wear out much quicker so have to be changed more often and generally create a harsher ride

Go standard SW in rear with airbags , to compensate for the removal of the boge unit , that way you will retain your existing ride comfort at both ends of weight range. You can see when landrover cut costs and removed the boge unit , the defenders all go around withe rear end sticking up in the air!

Hadn't considered air bags - more research required. I was looking at a terrifirma kit until I realised that they don't do a standard height kit (not that I could find). All thoughts welcome.

Just read the other live thread on shocks - ****part springs for £12.50 a corner seems very reasonable ( like most others on here I've had mixed experiences with the brand). If I go with that option which shocks would be suitable?

I intend to replace the turrets and ringsn with galv ones. Most of the bushesnhave already been replaced when the chassis was done.

Every single suspension kit I can find involves an amount of lift - I'm happy with standard height, unless there is an advantage to driving.

****part springs are actually ok from reviews ive seen, I wouldnt trust their shocks though, I dobt trust anything ****part including rubber

Oem parts or allmakes are easy enough to find in standard form

there is nothing wrong with OE shocks for standard use, and even non standard doubling them is a viable solution in most cases

OK, if I went for the Terra firma tf206 kit what difference would the 2" lift make?

Has anyone else bought a complete kit at standard height?

Here's mine.

Not as many pictures as a Buster's guide but should give some idea. Fairly straightforward if you don't mind freeing off a lot of rusty nuts and bolts. The rear springs came out easily by hand but the fronts needed spring compressors. A press was very valuable for changing bushes, but some people do manage without. I used Britpart's finest springs but did splash out a bit on some posh Koni shock absorbers. I would imagine that you won't notice the difference without the self levelling unit - I'd be tempted not to fit one and see how you get on without it.

im going for standard springs (new take offs for £40 on ebay) with terrifirma at shocks then +1 lift blocks and -2 front and rear shock mounts, slight lift to deal better with towing and extra weight etc, -2 turrets to give more travel from a standard shock

+ extended bump stops yes to stop the shocks bottoming out seeing as you're restricting upward travel

The research continues.....

In terms of the turrets I was considering replacing them with galv ones. However what are your thoughts on other types of turrets?
