Hi everyone. First time poster on here. Just looking some advice. I have the opportunity to buy a very clean 20 year old Land Rover 110 Special vehicle with low mileage. I have always wanted to own a Landy and see a potential opportunity here. So my thoughts and plans are the following:

I’d like to buy this vehicle, which already has the appropriate size coachwork which in great condition and perfect for turning it into a full height camper van. The Landy is in great condition both mechanically and structurally. I’m considering doing a really high end job on this, the works in terms of the camper van fit out, interior upgrades and a stack of engine and suspension upgrades.

I am thinking if I can get the vehicle for approx £15k and spend approx another £20k doing it up whether there is likely to be any opportunity to sell it on and whether the figures stack up. Is this worth considering or is it likely to be a money pit that could cost me more than it would ever get back.

I was thinking that if a good enough job was done on it could it return a bit of profit for me, to allow me to sell it and to re-invest in a Landy that’s better suited to me.

What I’m asking is probably very difficult to gauge or to predict I guess. I’m just looking peoples thoughts on the likely market for something like that, whether people think that someone would pay decent money for a very well converted and upgraded 110 Special Vehicle as an campervan and whether £20k would go near to doing a high end camper conversion and mechanical upgrade.....

I really appreciate people taking the time to read this.

If you had 30k to spend on a 20yr old 110 camper would you?...is the real question you need to ask yourself...me I would buy a 110 and get a company to build to my spec...
 
Tend to agree with ‘Shippers’ here.
If you’ve the money to buy one, do it up and then sell it why not just buy the one which, as you say, would be better suited to you and cut out the camper?
 
I have to agree with the above, I don't think you would be looking at a 20 year old landrover for 30k if you wanted an of road camper, far more likely to be looking at going bespoke. If you have no need for the camper I would spend the 15k you plan on buying it with to buy a land rover more suited to you needs from the beginning. With the best will in the world if you are doing the work properly and using quality parts it is very difficult to make a profit rebuilding, customizing or modifying land rover sunlass you have a large company already behind you and usually are catering to the silly london lot who want them lowered and with a body kit and shiny bits!
 
As said before, I can't see you getting a return on your money with a camper conversion, no matter how well it's done. The big money seems to be on making them look like a monster truck, with stupidly large wheels and black paint.
 
To echo some of the comments above, a camper conversion tends to a "special" to the converter. In other words, they'll do it to a standard and budget that suits them or pay someone to do it to their spec. If you've done something other than what they might do themselves- given the time, money and skill - then you'll have a hard time selling it on without hard bargaining. Most Overlanders or similar have a pretty good idea of what they want and might be prepared to pay a premium for something that fits the bill, so maybe you need to get some experience in and of the game before you start to play?

Land Rover ‘special vehicle’ doesn’t really mean much, just means it was a custom order with Land Rover for some reason or another. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s automatically worth more.

£15k for a 20 year old landy, it better be mint.

Do it up for another £20k means you are in it for £35k, Need to sell for more than that to make a decent profit, the figures don’t stack up imo
