When I did my restoration a couple of years back I decided to go the rock slide route like these:

I have been 'told' the kids need side steps (!) so I am considering these:
Defender 110 - Fire and Ice Style Side Steps

I don't have the lower trim to replace the sliders and I know they will be redundant with steps but can I fit steps with sliders or do they use the same mounting holes?

Just weld steps to the sliders

I bought a folding side step and fitted that to my slider. Did the job perfectly and looked smart. That is until I forgot to fold it back up and whacked it off the side of a very narrow bridge

I'd be interested to see if you can fit steps with the rock sliders, I could do with some in mine!
