My 110 2.5 N/A has drum brakes on the rear, can these be replaced with disc brakes or would it require a replacement axle?

SC

But it won't be a Salisbury axle tho'.

It is possible to convert a Salisbury drum to discs but needs some fabrication.

Nope but it'll have better ground clearance though :) and he'll know that the brakes will be purpose built for that axle and won't need to worry about whether the job has been done properly.

I'm sure there is a reason that there is a Salisbury axle under the rear of a 110.

There are also disc braked versions on later 110s, although they are a bit expensive.

All good info for my development. I'm only a semi professional diy spanner man I am better with bolt on and off parts, limited facilities so I try to keep it simple.

What is so special about the salisbury axle, I need educating

They're bigger and stronger than the Rover axles fitted to disco, 90 & RR. But if yu int planning on loading the 110 to it's limits with half a doz squaddies and all their gear and throwing a sankey trailer or artillery piece on the back. Then changing it for a disco axle is unlikely to cause you any problems at all..

Ta, the worst it will probably be getting is a a speedboat on the back and a few dips in the sea when launching or some very gentle off roading. I'm not to bothered about the drum brakes really, there easy to keep in order. Probably keep them on for now, I like simple things, less to go wrong

Even I want to convert mine to Disc on the Rear. Heard that Zeus have a kit of say 600 pounds. Too expensive.

I have taken my disc braked salisbury axle off my 110 as it restricted ground clearance to much, i have fitted a 300 disco axle to mine and all it required was the spring seats swapping and a 30mm spacer making for the prop shaft. So far it has done over 10,000 miles towing a 3.5 ton trailer/loaded up to the roof with engines etc and has not given any problems - only thing I did notice on first fitting is that the rear braking isn't quite up to what it was before as the rear discs are smaller but by fitting some Ferodo pads in it now out performs the original

Things may be different in Portugal but if you did that in the UK you run the risk of driving while uninsured, the plated weight of a 110 is based on it having a salisbury axle which is rated at that capacity, change it for a lower rated one without altering the plate and it gives the insurance company the perfect excuse to void your insurance in the event of a crash.

They might not check if it's a £1500 bump but kill or seriously injure somebody and they'll be all over it.

so i take it a disco 200tdi axel (with discs) will fit in my 200tdi 90 (with drums) without any problems? is it just a case of changing the axel and brake pipes? sorry for the :hijacked:

You can buy all the parts to bolt on disk brakes to a salisbury axle no problems. you will need:

New stub axles,
new hub assys,
set of disks,
pair of bloody expensive caliper brackets, pair circa £80,
pair of calipers,
new drive shafts pair,
new drive members,

All can be bolted up but I think its the best part of £300 or 400 quid

300 or 400 quid is a lot cheaper than a 600 quid "conversion". Probably not as cheap as a second hand disc braked axle though.

Circa £350 for a known good take off salisbury from breakers on ebay about 80 to 200 take a chance. Be wary some people on ebay have bolted on Rr front hubs and selling as disk braked which isn't a good idea unless you want to mess about as the hub nuts protrude too far off the stub axle and reqs some mods

hi Andy if you know what your doing with wheel bearings/hubs n stubs to keep things safe. (people seem to think using wrong lock tabs and having the lock nut only on a few threads is safe) Then you can use early front hubs and the like but it amazes me what some people think is safe.. Brackets are somthing like frc3603 or somthing like that but as I say they are a fortune. pre TD5 110's salisburys were all std old type axles with bolt on brackets. Early TD5 110's had weldeed brackets and the later 110 TD5 are 4 pin HD rover Wolf spec axles.
