I own a 110 with the 2.5 N/A diesel engine. 1986.
The gearbox has reverse next to first.
I believe I have the LT77 gearbox, what I would like to know is will the r380 and santana gearboxes go straight in?. Also, are the LT77 gearboxes for the disco's the same?.
When I get into 3rd and 4th I get a bad vibration, the faster I go, it goes away. If I slip into neutral, it goes away.
I was off roading at the war and peace show and twice landed into a gully with a large thud and split the front dif housing, i'm thinking the shock has gone up the front prop and damaged the gearbox, I have checked the props/wheel bearings/steering linkage etc etc.
Any ideas?.

LT77 it is indeed, and the R380 should drop in, they actually look very similar on the outside aswell.

If its the same type of box then its the same on any LR, just different bellhousings for different engines.

You could have distrubed the layshaft/output shaft alingment, saying what you have said it could be all sorts of damage.

Have you tried running it without the front prop in.

Were talking about the central diff here not the axle diff. Difflock only locks the transmission up to the two axles, not the wheels on each axle. So if you removed one drive shaft and left the transfer box un-difflocked you wouldn't get any drive, by locking the diff you will get drive to which ever axle you have left the drive shaft connected to.

Took off the front prop and it was worse!.
A new gearbox I think.
Can I fit a LT77/R380 and santana straight to a 2.5 diesel?.
I'm pretty sure mine is a LT77, would I be better off buying a gearbox and transfer box complete?. How hard is it to change the transfer box from old unit to new one.

UPDATE.
My dad rekons ive shifted a bearing in the gearbox, I have carried on driving it for the last two weeks and the problems gone!. Dad rekons bearing has squared itself up, will carry on driving and see what happens.

To Landrover11019.
The R380 or the santana wont go straight in without a fight!

Unless you have a retro fit short bell housing and front input shaft for the R380. You will have to move your engine forward to get the gear lever in the correct position (if its a defender R380). If its a Disco R380 the gear lever will come up in the centre seat.
The santana has a V8 bell housing so you would need a conversion plate. Does any one do one ?
Kind regards,
Allan from LEGS.
