I must learn how to weld some day. Yours looks great Jai. Until then I'll have buy. I also agree with your comments above. I never do serious offroad, but have dragged the plough on the back of my Disco coming up out of a ford - seems daft they hang so low.

Its not my welding I cannot take that as my work Spitfiremk1uks welding should be ok he used to build rollcages for comp motors and rebuilds LR's when he's bored. Saying that many other people make cages and I wouldn't even sit in the car let alone passenger it offroad chicken ****e comes to mind.

Nice job jai:)

Id like something similar to the Extreme4x4 product. I have an adjustable tow bar fitted and I have to have the towball on the lowest fitting to get my caravan level. Would be nice to be able to remove it easily, might have to invest one day.

Just had this back from Terrafirma

Hi James

Thanks for your enquiry.

The Terrafirma receiver hitches do not conform to any regulations and are not certificated. They are primarily intended for Off Road use.

Am I right in thinking that only vehicles made after a certain year - 1998? - need their towing equipment to be type approved?

**Edit - have a read of the first paragraph on this link, which states "Within the United Kingdom all vehicles with EWVTA first registered on or after 01/08/1998 ("S" Registration) requires a type approved 94/20 EC towbar

Guess that means my 1996 Defender can tow using a towbar made out of plasticene if I wanted:D

Great link, thanks, answered the question perfectly!

I definitely want a Utility now - that commercial vehicle status is gonna be handy lol!!!

Excellent, i would think the Double Cab would fall into this category looking at the like.

I'll check with my insurance just to make sure (or would you leave it?)

Sounds like ive helped you without fully understanding my own post:D
Am I correct in thinking the utility Defenders are exempt from requiring these type approved tow bars? I thought LR only produced the utility spec from 2007 onwards.
