Trying to sort out the bench seats in my 110 (as a distraction from doing more involved jobs) -

Im sure the base is supposed to fold up, right?

This looks very much like a hinge -

But where those spacers / suports are the black cylinders just under the angle section, the bolts run right through to the body. Id have thought one of them was supposed to be free?

And at the other end, its bolted through on both sides of the hinge -

^^^^ you can just about see the bolt heads hiding in the rust.

So, what's the situation? Is that as it should be? Do the bases never hinge up? If so, that cuts down the load space some...

They wouldn't hinge up on mine either, don't know if they were supposed to or just rusted up but they got binned anyway.

They would normally fold. However most Land Rovers have had something done to them during their life, so chances are these have been fitted differently, or adapted so they don't fold (might stop them clanking when you go over bumps).

Hmm... mixed reports coming in here.

Most say they are all like that from new (in which case it seems like an odd design) but then others saying the opposite!

Whilst we are on the subject, anyone know how the backs come off? I mean the fabric / foam section. It is a case of unbolting the whole frame or somthing?

If you're going to replace the fabric, it's a good idea to unbolt the whole thing anyway. It will give you a chance to throw a bit of paint at the frames.

They are not supposed to be bolted down in front of the hinge. They fold up. There is supposed to be a hooked check strap riveted to the base, when folded up the hook attaches to the back of the seat to hold it up. If these are missing the seats rattle when not in use so people bolt them down.

The backs screw on from behind. You have to take the frame out to remove them.

You can see the bolt and spacer holding the frame down 6 inches in front of the 'hinge' bolt.........so I guess if you undo that it would still fold up with a few days soaking in 3in1....., but a bit of a faff just to increase the load space if temporary.... A

I probably would have ended up with a high cap truck cab, but my partner complained about children and dogs... So we ended up with the csw.

I'd be tempted to take the rear seats out, but I don't know if that then changes the class irretrievably at mot time (?).

At present its on the log book as a 12 seated, which would probably be good to keep.

should hinge mine is a 90 sometimes has seats sometimes not at mot makes no difference at mot .most seven seat cars have removable rear seats still a seven seater

I don't agree.. the pics are identical and I don't believe retrofit folk all drilled and used the same bolts. Perhaps early models were like this ?

It would make sense though if the hole was already there in all seats though ;)

You maybe right. I don't know.
All I know is that this is how they are in my Def 90.
