Thank you Cobnut.
You are right there are no simple answers.
It is very difficult to find a good reliable 300 tdi especially here in Ireland where i leave. I can find a few in the UK but then the import tax makes it very expensive (arround 33% of the price).
Here there are a good few 110 CSW td5 for sale at a reasonable price, going to see one next week.
I need the landrover to drive me and my familly arround every days but also need it for our trip next year in Australia.
difficult choice for a newbie like me

My brother in law lives in Ireland and he has taken over vans he has bought in England.
If you are willing to get a Defender 90 with no rear seat or windows it will cost you very little to import it. Maybe switch roofs at a later date?
Incidentally, the rate of VRT on large vans, lorries and tractors is just €50, while bikes are €2 up to 350cc and €1 per cc after that. Small vans, pick-ups and some 4X4s are charged at a rate of 13.3% of the OMSP. This is the reason, therefore, that there’s a difference of €9000 between a Hyundai Terracan car and van, despite their being identical bar the back seats and side windows.

Worth considering?

Thanks MrJC,
yes it is worth considering.
Didn't realise that commercial vehicles have a lower VRT rate.
Going to see a 110 Tdi CSW next week here in Ireland so if that doesn't work out then i might follow your advise.
