I'm thinking about getting my 109 resprayed in gloss white with black roof and trim.

Does anyone have a rough idea i should be paying including prep?

The current paint work is a very poor quick rush job and I'd like a very smart looking 109.

Thanks all!

depends on the finish. £300 cash job that looks alright but with some runs, bad masking and overspray to 2-3k proper job in an oven with parts removed.

Thank you, we have a local guy who did some insurance work for my other car and i was really happy with the result. Just so i know what price to aim for when it comes to cash work.

That also depends on what standard's the guy who paints the motor has, for 300 quid, I'd buy a cheap compressor, spray gun, masking tape and a can of Dulux.

You can get some excellent results with Tekaloid coach paint.
As above if you don't like the Paint now I doubt you would like a £300 spray job
Tekaloid coachpaint & varnish
I got mine here
Turners Trade Paints Ltd | serving the Automotive, Industrial and Decorative industry
Heres another place
Tekaloid 318 (Formerly BG18) Single Pack Coach Enamel ALL COLOURS | Buy oil, lubricants, greases and more from Smith and Allan

My local car paint place mixes brush on paint, its cheaper but not as good as Tekaloid

Thank you, ive actually used tekaloid on my boat and had some good results with minimal effort.

I am just reading up now on how to do a professional looking job although i don't think i will be able to do it to that level!

I work abroad and so dont have the time to do it myself unfortunately. Im getting married in september and would like to use it for my grooms to turn up in, being a LWB and in a village it will carry us all. :)

All depends on the quality of the work you want done.

I had my 88" done a couple of years ago and I had prices from £750 to £3000.
As you probably know, good paintwork is all about the prep and this can run into many hours labour - removal of some parts and refitting, removing windows and fitting back with new seals etc. Many body shops work of an hourly rate and this can be anywhere between £35-£60 per hour.

Personally I think it depends on what overall condition the rest of the Landy is in....chassis, bulkhead, hubs, engine etc. if it's all in very good / excellent order then you can probably justify a good quality two pack spray.

Alternatively, if it's mainly for the wedding you're concerned, you could just hire one and save some cash

From memory its very glossy to start with but some people let it dry for a couple of weeks then put varnish over the top to give a higher gloss

Well just to give an idea of my vehicle, I only picked it up last week and this is the condition underneath and on the bulkhead. I hope you'll agree that the condition of the chassis is excellent for its age and well worth restoring as sympathetically as possible

I really like this look on a defender I have seen in the flesh,

But i dont know if that will lend itself well to an older series?

I have just seen this though and I think it looks impeccable!

The grey really sets the older series off well.

It would take a lot of prep to get that finish on an older vehicle.
Personally I would just do it Matt Nato Green
This was a £300 Vitara painted by me and the kids aged 6-8, total cost £40

I'm not really after perfection, at the end of the day I will still be going green laning with it but i do want gloss finish that is reasonnable. Definitely not matt sorry, not a fan of matt and i may as well leave it as it is.

I would buy a small pot of Tekaloid and see how it looks on a small part of the vehicle after a few weeks, its cheaper and easier than a respray, ask at a local bus company as many still coach paint vehicles

I wish I was home to do it. I am stuck with paying professionals as I'm working abroad at the moment :\

Depends on your budget then really. If you're happy to spend on it then go for it. What condition is the bulkhead like along the top rail just under the screen? If you're happy it's all solid then probably worth repainting. If you think it may need to be pulled apart in the next 18 months then probably little point just at this stage. Get some quotes and go from there

Thank you, now I have a rough idea of what I should be paying for painting i will see what is offered. Will speak to my local spray shop and see what he says.

Well if you're on a budget and want to use your landy then I cannot recommend enough roller painting. Shock horror.

I read about this online about 7 years ago, and since then it's grown in popularity. The reason I'm such a great believer in it is because I did it to my first car when I was about 19 and everybody was amazed by the results.

I've attached a pic of the results, and bear in mind I did this as a teenager with no experience of painting so much as a garden fence, and on a shoestring budget (incl paint, sandpaper, filler and all prep materials it cost me no more than maybe 75 quid). I used rustoleum paint, and had it mixed by a place on-line to the colour of BMC Tartan red.

The car was off the road just less than a week, and I worked on it about 6 hours a day, about 3 days were purely spent rubbing it down, filling, priming, and sanding, and then a final day of wet and dry, and that evening I meticulously panel wiped it, and gave it a coat. Left it to dry overnight, and gave it another coat the following evening. The next day the paint was still wet, so had to wait until the following day to re-attach all the trim, bonnet etc. Which I allowed a few hours for, but actually took a day and a half. In the end, it did take a good month or so for the paint to properly cure, but the car was usable about 48 hours after it's last coat of paint.

The finish was okay, and very glossy, but there a good deal of orange peel effect noticeable at half a metre or less. On a Landy, I don't think this would be out of the ordinary, and probably would be expected. (I think a pristine paint job on a landy looks out of place).

May be worth a thought for you.

Oh and if it were me, I would only paint an old landy like yours bronze green, satin or gloss.
