Hi Guys,

Hopefully one of you will be able to help,

My Step daughter has a petrol freelander, It keeps on cutting out. I read on here about changing the filter on the fuel pump which I did. It didn't make any difference.
The fuel pump only runs for a couple of seconds and then stops. Is this correct? I would have thought it would run all the time to keep the fuel flowing.

Thanks in advance

Martin

Yes when the engine is running the fuel pump needs to run all the time. Make sure your immobiliser is disarming though before condemming the fuel pump.

You'll need to clarify things a little.
The fuel pump will run for circa two or three seconds when you turn the ignition on . This is to prime the fuel rail .
Once the engine fires the pump runs continually to maintain the fuel rail pressure for the injection system.
I also had this problem a couple of years ago with the same intermittent cutting out of the engine. Did as you and replaced the internal attached fuel filter and cleaned the pick up gauze ( which was almost blocked ) but still the problem persisted. A normal pump should be virtually inaudible when the engine is ticking over but my old one was clearly in distress and could be heard trying to pick up the fuel.
A new pump , which wasn't cheap , sorted it out .
Good luck.

Thanks Guys,

I have bought a new pump and am going to try this tomorrow. I hope it works as otherwise I am lost and I reckon it will be a trip to the garage.

Fortunately I do have a good LR garage local to me and there are one of the good guys.

Well it didn't work, I fitted the pump in the tank with a new seal. It took ages to actually get it running and then once started it idled well for ages. As soon as I put it in gear and went to move it it died.

I eventually got it started again and managed to drive it although it was running fairly rough. I did about a mile in it before it cut out completely and wouldn't restart. I misfires and generally has no power.

I think it will be a trip to the LR garage to have it plugged in to see what is wrong

Unless anyone else has any suggestions, other than a match
