I can't belive this to be true. I don't understand how a 1.8 manual could use just as much fuel as a 3.3L auto which is probably twice as heavy.

Would anyone know what the MPG of a 2003 1.8 petrol freelander is ?? as we live in Jersey this would mostly be town driving !

Not only will one of these piles of rubbish use more petrol,it will also lighten your bank balance by a considerable sum.I would strongly urge you for the sake of your sanity to give up on the idea of buying one of these devil motors.I would suggest a much more reliable car would be a Jeep Cherokee 4.0.I own both these vehicles and can assure you that you will regret the day you heard the word FREELANDER.As a comparison the Jeep does 28mpg on a run and has had app £900 spent in 3.5 years.The freelander does 25mpg on a run and has had £1500 spent in the past 9 months,which obviously does not include the £3,000 the previous owner spent and also does not include the bill for air-con,rear window,rear wiper,sunroof repairs,etc.I hope this advice is of some help....flyboy2
 
I keep telling you lot not all Freelanders are crap. Some of us treat them like sh*t, very little maintenance and they just keep going. Sure the mpg averages about 30 but most folk would know this before spending thousands of pounds. If they didn't know before they bought one they must be thick. I also see constant critisism about the 1.8 petrol. Yet the ones that have the most serious disasters are the V6 and TD4 according to the threads on this forum. Considering the 1.8 is the most common model you would expect it to have the majority of threads about major breakdowns, but look around the site and you will find it's not so. (Not to mention extra servicing costs on V6 & TD4) I bought mine as a car, and I dont need to reach a ton to feel good about it. If I wanted speed I would have bought a hot hatch but alas my age, wife, common sense and desire to stay alive tells me to stick with the Hippo. I got a good one and I bet I am not alone..

didnt say they were - just poorly designed and poorly put together. If yu got a good un - i wish ya well - mine wasnt - wen its goin it is good - wen it stops its expensive - VERY expensive.
There are several known design issues that yu cant deny - vis valves on v6, hgf on 1.8, turbo hoses on td4. cracking chassis, VCU, etc etc - i wont repeat them all coz i have bored most of yu for too long over the last year. All I asked for woz a reliable car - and I (repeat I) didnt get one - i can only comment on my experience and my knowledge as a chartered engineer. A 1st year apprentice (wots one of them?) cud have designed it betta on a Monday morning with a hangover.

Its all too easy to criticise - if yu have looked at the threads yu will have seen that I (and lots of others) have spent a lot of time and effort trying to design improvements and recommendations to overcome the inbuilt failings of this product!

Cheers Mondo, just trying to drum up a wee bit of support for the "Good Ones". Mad Hat Man I know from reading the forum that you have had a nightmare with the V6 and I know others have had major grief and it's cost a lot of you a fortune to try and put right. Maybe I have been lucky , but it's been three years of luck now and I do bugger all to look after mine. I put petrol in it check (not change) the oil now and then. Give it to the mechanic once a year for service and MOT. Thats it. And if I've jinxed myself and it goes tits up then I suppose it must be my turn to fork out a bit of cash.( just a small bit please!!!)

yu only spent £1500 - yu aint lived mate! Theres a couple of us (at least) have spent £4500 in 12 months!
Personally i prefer the X-trail. ;)
To be honest I would put the freelander at the top of the list for looks,but looks ain't everything and I personally won't pay the sort of money it takes to keep one of these things on the road.I was lucky (must be joking) to have bought the car after the previous owner had the misfortune to fork out on an engine and other repairs,but I know the lull before the storm won't last.Pity Land Rover never made a V8 version with the ultra reliable Buick engine.This would have been a car worth having.......Flyboy2
 
yeah - been discussed lots - see freds. Unfortunately not easy. I think a viable alternative would be the Rover "T" series engine as in the 220 Turbo.

What you got to swap MHM, cos it wont be the V6. If you have summit chunkier like a Hummer in your garage too, I might think about it. Seeing the way a lot of cars keep out the way of a Land Rover I would love to meet some of the snot noses in their souped up hatches on a tight bend with a Hummer to see the reaction. Come to think of it I would mabey get the wife to drive it with a set of L plates to really scare the sh*t out them:rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:
