My W reg 1.8 has an annoying Intermittent Power Loss problem, when driving along it all of a sudden feels as though Im towing a heavy weight and no matter how much I try to excellerate the car just wont respond, then all of a sudden it will clear and excellerate away as if its got a rocket up its arse. I can sit at 70mph on the motorway and everything seems fine the problem seems worse at low revs. I have had new plugs, leads, dizzy cap but the problem is still there. I have had it hooked up to a computer and there are no fault codes. Can anyone help?

Worth trying a new fuel filter and see if it improves.

Otherwise check the air inlet system for any splits and check that the throttle flap is not sticking. Possibly worth removing and cleaning the IACV (Idle air inlet valve)

It is worth taking the fuel pump out and cleaning it too I had the same problem and cleaning the filter made so much difference that I now make it part of the regular service routine. Easy job to just need a couple of screwdrivers and a hammer.

Hi, reading this with interest, as my 1.8 has a very occasional similar problem...almost as though the fuel pump stops working. Only done it 4 or 5 times in the last year, and only during a long run...20 mins to work and back every day, fine. an hour long journey and it eventually starts to loose power, and cuts out. Re-starts after a few minutes and is fine again. Checked the connector block on the top of the pump. and there was some green corrosion on two of the contacts. Gave it a clean and a squirt of WD40. Hopefully this was the problem.
Guess i should check the filter, so can anyone tell me where it is located please?
Thanks,
Russ

Hi the filter is located in the fuel tank under the pump, you can access it from a panel under the passengers seats.
