Here's a bizarre one for you all to have a go at.

Freelander bought in january...little used...full tank reduced now to 1/4 full for first time. Engine cut out on flat road doing about 30mph. No warning lights. On side of road engine turns over, plenty juice in battery will not fire. Waited for recovery. Every 10 mins tried to start, turns over...does not fire. Dodgy petrol gauge possibility...maybe no fuel?

recovery turns up sprays engine start spray to confirm ignition, engine fires and stays running! Turned off, starts first time. Got me home no worries, took me to swansea this morning...on way back cut out again no obvious reason why (luckily had already been to get my own can of spray) used spray to start again.... stayed running until home.

So what caused this? I am assuming fuel related as spray starts everytime though what effect does the running of the engine have on the delivery of the fuel?

Fuel filter blockage/lazy fuel pump - if so then what possible effect could starting the engine with the spray have on the fault.

Fuel pump relay/fuel cut off same as above why would the engine continue to run normally after starting with the spray?

Crankcase sensor - same as above, why would adding a different fuel (the spray) make the make the sensor work again

anyone understand this bizarre fault?

Cheers

Spray could make it spin over faster giving a stronger crank signal as its an inductive pick up! Maybe:D

Hi Mark, I'm not a mechanic but had intermittent problems with my Freelander Mk1 1.8 petrol, for over a year where it would sometimes cut out without warning (usually at the most inconvenient junction or roundabout, when slowing down) and sometimes for a few seconds ran very rough. It would also sometimes be terrible to start when hot. Also the revs would sometimes rise for no reason while idling. This got steadily worse over months. I replaced the coolant sensor £4.80 on ebay, and simple to do, after reading a similar problem on landyzone and it is now totally fixed, it's like a new car.
For £4.80 it might be worth a try. Good luck. Derek

Sorry, forgot to update the solution.

The problem was a worn fuel pump. When the fuel level was low the bearings in the pump overheated and seized the pump, stopping fuel flow. When allowed to cool down fired up ok. A full tank kept the pump cool.

Changed pump, all ok since
