Look down the side of the cooler behind the power steering reservoir. Looks like this.
Sensor is normally closed. Open = overheat, so bad connection gives intermittent message on dash.

There is no fan in the instrument cluster or anywhere else for that matter. Relays can emit a hum when they are getting past their best.
