OK the saga continues after overheating caused blown head gasket.
Heads skimmed and refitted.

Replaced viscous fan, rad, water pump, stat all the things suggested
Filled using hose for rad and topping up expansion tank.
Rplaced fuse box so AC fans now working.
She will just sit there forever and idle for ever with AC on.
Tested for gases in water but OK.
Take her for a drive then after 30mins in traffic she overheats????
Water seems to be coming out from around the expansion cap. Replace cap and still the same problem?
Any suggestions to what I am obviously missing?

Thats the one, i missed it on ur 1st post, you seem to have done everything only thing i can think of is.... my mates overheated but nothing serious it was the water pump but he fitted a new thermostat in the housing at the end of the top hose then we found out thats a no no, have you done the same by any chance?....theres plenty folk on here who can help, good luck

Did you blow through the small pipe which goes from the top of the radiator to the expansion tank??..it should be clear.
The procedure is in RAVE...coolant system refilling.

The aircon condenser fans rarely come on unless the weather is very warm or the airflow is insufficient over the condenser (Stationary) OR.. on V8's the coolant temperature is excessively high.

With what you have done, added to the new parts and negative sniff test result, I suspect an air lock somewhere.
Suggest you retrace the procedure against the instructions in RAVE for starters, draining and refilling the system if needs be.
As Nathan says, check that someone may have put a thermostat in the radiator top hose elbow on the front of the inlet manifold...not unknown!!!...if they have, get rid of it.

The thing i dont understand is.... given the fact the v8 dont have a thermostat in the top hose housin why the feck is it when you call motor spares and tell em what you need they give you something you dont? Surely this must be a known fact within the motor factors trade?

The top end of the engine is very similar to the old 3.9/4.2 EFI which uses a thermostat inside the housing. Having had years of experience of motor factors dimwits who can't even read a parts catalogue, I'm not surprised!
That's why it's best to use a LR spares specialist or search online.
Secondly, access to the proper service manual will give you an idea of what the part you need looks like, so when you go to the factors for an egg and they place an orange on the counter, you can tell them!!!

Just check if the fan is sucking air in or blowing air out. The fan blades on serpentine and pre-serpentine/diesel are pitched in the opposite direction and fitting the wrong one will cause overheating in traffic (anything from 10 to 30mph) but not at idle or at higher speeds.

same symptoms on my discovery were caused by the rad being fubar - in my case the fins were blocked with salisbury clay.. how much of your rad can you see cos until I took the front grill off the disco it was impossible to see how bad it was....

Thanks for the tips
I will check to see if there is a stat in the top hose and blow throught the small hose from the top of rad to the expansion tanks and drain and refill the system.....fingers crossed.

Bingo
Took Rangie back from garage and decided to do it myself.
Yes found big air lock, they had not bled heater and i think had not cleared the overflow hose from radiator.
Put in the ceramic engine block sealer recommended as i had bought it.
She is just fine now and suspect she didnt need the ceramic sealer after all.
So new water pump, radiator, fuse box exhaust, heads done ......probably have to keep her now.
Thanks everyone for the advise.
