Fitted om a 94 300tdi, is too small, One year old, reading 12.7 volts on saturday, air temperature reaches minus 7 on monday morning, it wont start, not enough juice to crank the engine. It snows monday afternoon, could have done with the disco. Battery is a 68amp hr, 072 supposed to fit but thats only 70 amp hr. Does that make much of a difference when fitted or is there a better alternative.

I got one of those last year when it got cold and me old battery gave up, and it's been tops! It's got a comfy handle n'all!

072 is the battery case ref number and same as a 069, the amps and the CCA amps can vary. A battery with 12.7 volts is ok that will increase when the alternator is spinning, but you may have a duff cell/cells then the battery won't have the power to turn the engine over so go and get your battery 'drop' tested.

This link will help with what batteries that are available. Car Batteries, Cheap Car Batteries, Replacement Car Batteries, Next Day Delivery from Perfomancebatteries.co.uk

Drop test I havent done, have to see the fitters at work.

you can prob go even bigger-your battery tray should be around an inch longer than an 072...generally larger case = more amps

why do people think its the amp hours they need to look at when buying a battery amp hours only matter when the battery is being use in a marine enviroment, you need to know the cranking amps of a battery for vehical use hope this helps

Dave:)

Its also worth knowing that the 1000 Cold Start Marine Cranking Amps quoted above are different to CCA quoted for car batteries. Both are the amps that the battery will deliver for a short period while trying to start the engine, but the marine figure is at a higer temperature. The 1000 CSMCA figure is about 750CCA.
This is much bigger than the 560CCA that you would get if you went in to Halfords and said sell me a battery for my 300TDI. It is this figure that makes this battery good. The 86Ah figure is a measure of how what the battery will deliver when not being charged. In this case 86 Amps for one hour, or 1Amp for 86 hours or 2A for 43 hours etc. This is relevant if you want to power accessories when the engine isn't running

Its the general reference point for battery specs, The more amp hrs specified means a bigger more powerfull battery with a higher cca rating too. [ hopefully].

The lucas im using has about 500cca, so the 750 cca quoted on here for the bigger battery is quite an improvement.

saturday was a bit mad...... i ended up trying to sort some stuff out then i had to go on the christmas do that night(had to be at work for 5:30)

dare i ask how you set your dash on fire.....???

i "forgot" that in Morocco I had to emergency rewire my air compressor as I blew a bugger hard to get to relay-however I did also forget to re-do it on my return & inflated a tyre.
After 2 minutes , the switch on the dash had a nice flame comin from it as I never replaced the relay & was trying to run a 45amp current through a modified wiper switch! DICKHEAD!!!! And the worst thing was I had to buy some terminals off you lot cos I ran out fixing it!:D
