Hi all

Was driving my 05 Freelander TD4 the other day, and it started going sluggish before cutting out and not starting.

Green Flag bloke did the usual checks people have mentioned on here before.

The low pressure fuel pump & fuel filter have been changed but to no avail. Injector test has been done (as has been documented on here numerous times), and the battery has been changed but still won’t start.

There’s fuel getting to the injectors and the Rail is getting fuel so I’m puzzled as to what is now stopping it from starting. It starts on EazyStart and idles VERY lumpy up until 1500/2000RPM before dying.

Any further suggestions? Help more than welcome

Thanks

I'm not a freelanderer but I believe it uses the same HP fuel regulator as my RR TD6 which is known to fail. Ask me how I know :D
I know you say the injectors are getting fuel but is the pressure getting high enough?

Cheers for the reply mate. Hahaha it seems quite a few people have gone through that pain . I’m not going to lie I’m fairly mechanically proficient but diesels in general and the Land Rover I’ve never had a crack at before.

How do you test the pressure? As I say bit of a noob on this particular subject etc haha

I just used my Foxwell diag tool. I'm no mechanic by any means but I'll have a go at most things. I refurbed my HP pump a couple of years ago after similar symptoms to you i.e. started on easystart but it went again a few weeks ago so I got a proper refurbed pump and touch wood it's fine now.

They seem to be a nightmare don’t they! I’ve tested the sensor connected to the fuel rail and it’s reading just over 0.5 volts with ignition on. Thinking it might be worth getting a repair kit for the regulator, hopefully the o-rings have gone and it’s letting pressure out that way.

What model foxwell did you get mate & how much realistically for a refurbished pump?
Cheers

Diesels aren't that complicated, and the engine is a BMW 3 Series unit anyway.
Common issues are rail sensor plug and wire corrosion, the MAF sensor failing, and the O rings on the pressure regulator on the HP fuel pump.

Like I say I know now't about Freelanders other than they use the same regulator. My recon pump was just under £500 (not fitted) but that's for the RR TD6.
I have a Foxwell NT510pro but it's been replaced by the NT530. Not sure if it's any good on a Freelander but others with them may know better.

Hi all interested in this thread as my freelander is having trouble starting which seems to be getting worse and running a little rough. Once hot not any problem and no noticeable lack in power as I tow a caravan. Thinking of replacing the O rings. Spoke to Land Rover and they can only identify one of the O rings which is the face seal by the look’s of things. Can you tell me where I can get the two seals as the smaller one looks to be the important one

That looks like the ones. Thank you for the quick reply. I shall get these as soon as I can. There are three shown or is that just a generic picture. Thank you for your help. Also when I rev up slowly it does seem slow to respond so maybe this. Worth a try first.

One sits behind the other
