Open circuit in the electromagnetic coil? Prices for new compressors are frightening - does anyone know if you can change just the clutch? Any suppliers of same?

The clutch can be removed, so I can't see why it couldn't be changed. It's not common for the coils to fail, so you could probably strip them off a second hand compressor;)
 
Hi Guineafowl, I recently replaced my a/c pump off my 2002 TD4 as the pulley bearing was noisy. The compressor and clutch worked fine. It is, of course, still in the garage !! If it is of use to you I can send it for postage only. PM me if interested. So - it is fine and working with a noisy bearing. Having said that the front crank pulley was also making a noise and so I may have changed it without need !!!

Argh! Just ordered a scrapyard one off eBay. Having said that, it's in unknown condition so I'd be silly to pass yours up - it may even have the same fault if this is a common thing.

The bearings are available and easy to replace. Just strip the pulley off and tap out the bearing. Take the number off the bearing and order a replacement off Ebay. Press in the new bearing and reasonable with the replacement coil pack.
The pulley and coil canbe replaced with the compressor on the car;)
 
We now have aircon! I swapped over the clutch and coil from the eBay one, got a pipe repaired and the system regassed.

Many thanks to Nodge for your advice and Andyfreelandy for the offer of a spare compressor.

Incidentally, the leaking (aluminium alloy) pipe had corroded as it was held by and in direct contact with a steel bracket/clamp under the radiator. Have LR not heard of electrolytic corrosion?

is the comressor difficult to change and do you have to put 0 rings on the connecting pipes.
 
You'll need to get an aircon specialist to take the gas out BEFORE undoing any of the unions - pressure is high and the stuff is nasty - environment and faces best avoid it !!!. Then the compressor change is straight forward. O rings are needed. The O rings are special ones (green I think) and my air con man supplied new ones as part of a re-gas.

Thank you Andy, the gas was removed when the specialist found that the pump was kn****ck*red so no prob there, the rest was easy once you have managed to remove the bloody sump guard. Just disconnect the A/C pipes, release the drive belt, undo 3 bolts, one electrical connection and Bobs yr uncle. Did not find any 0 rings though, where were your 0 rings? My freeby is 2003 TD4 Mk1 BMW diesel

On the unions where pipes fit to compressor !! Very important - maybe they were there but you didn't notice - hope they are sound !
