Hi all,

02 Td4 Freelander 183,000 miles.

A minor problem, but one I can't quite work out. It's started to develop a small puddle of oil around the oil filler cap. Each time I wipe it away, then a week later it's built up again. When I remove the cap with the engine running, there's a good amount of blowby.

Odd thing is, there's nothing, not even a peep, from the dipstick tube. From advice on here, I change the crankcase breather filter at every service, currently every 6 months.

I realise there's probably wear in the engine at this age, but why no pressure from the dipstick tube, and why hasn't the clean breather filter sorted it? Can the breather valve itself become blocked?

Fit the cyclonic one and your days of blockage are over. Meanwhile clean the sponge in the Sh1tpart one.
 
breather valve can stick so replace the whole unit best bet ,think you can get one off the bay for about £50 ,gotta be worth a try .but as said use cyclone filter .

I assume all those recommending the cyclone breather have installed one. Where is a good place to get one? I can't find it on Island 4x4, where I normally get stuff, and the other site I use is down at the moment. I can't seem to trust eBay sellers when they say 'quality parts' - I always hear 'Britpart'.

Thanks again. Given the breather filter is brand new, it's unlikely to have instantly clogged so I'd better change the whole unit in case it's a problem with the valve next to it.
 
Quick update:

If you're thinking of buying the above eBay item, don't bother - it doesn't fit properly and the 'captive' bolts fall out and don't thread in. After some struggling I gave up and transferred the valve and cyclone unit to my old casing. Seems to work OK now.

On closer inspection of the filler cap, I found one of the metal ears was bent, preventing it from sealing properly. Swapped the cap over and all is well.
