Hi hope some one can help I have a 2002 discovery td5 auto with a strange problem, when I start it from cold it fires up straight away no problem give it a minute to circulate the oil . then if you rev it it seems to rev ok but if I put it into gear there's no throttle, you cant pull away forward or backwards.A friend has plugged it into nanocom and theres no codes, but it's saying it in low box,I have unpluged the sensor and it's still saying it's in low box,any ideas what this could be,After about five minutes if you put it into drive it will pull away but seems a bit sluggish,I can drive it and all gears seem to be working.

Hi, I don't have the auto but when was the g/box oil last changed?

I’d say this is a good question.... low ‘box oil is well known to cause drive issues with the autos. There is also a filter that can be changed in the auto boxes too.

Also worth noting, the auto boxes have a remote oil cooler up front with the main radiator, the pipes have been known to wear through (you’d know if this had happened obviously, by the pool on the floor) but this means that when you change the auto box oil you only change about half of it so it is suggested that you do an oil change then another after a set distance (that I can’t remember off the top of my head). There’s some good videos on YouTube for the various ‘boxes and dif’s oil changes.

not sure that would cause the lack of throttle response when cold and once warm all the gears work fine. and to answer lancorky I bought it as seen so no returns but thank you for the reply,I would love to sort the problem because the chassis is rot free.

Re-reading again, that’s a fair point.

On the nanocom you can see the supply voltage and the two sensor voltages for the throttle. It would be worth checking those both when working and in fault condition. Again, I’m not sure why this would be affected by if the engine/box is warm or cold though...

thank you spot1 my son has plugged his diagnostics kit into the disco it's not the nanocom and had a lot more data,he thinks it's something simple like low fluid level so will check tomorrow

Unfortunately your son's diagnostic code reader possibly won't pick up all the faults on the diesel Disco 2.
There are only three or four code readers that are known to be compatible with the D2. This is because the D2 wasn't fully OBDII compliant, instead it used Land Rover's own protocols.
For proper, truthful results only the Nanocom, Hawkeye or Lynx are recommended for DIY use.

thank you Brian47,my sons diagnostics is compatable with the d2,the nanocom read the box was in low range even with sensor diconected apparently a common fault with the nanocom my sons showed it working,im not sure the make but he paid a lot of money for it and i'm old school so all this modern stuff is above me.

well bought 2ltrs of atf fluid today ready to check level in gearbox, undone level plug and ended up removing about 2ltrs instead.all done now have orderd service kit and will sort it on the weekend.

presumably you had engine running at the same time

yes engine running cycled through gears and waited for the one drip a minute, even had my spirit level to make sure it was level

how would I check the fuel pump,It's still the same when cold, put it into gear and no throttle response yet give it five minutes and drives great and starts on the button.

What is your main battery voltage? I seem to remember several posts involving weird symptoms that have been as a result of a dying battery.....

Strange you say that I have noticed the lights are pulsing, was going to check the voltage, but the battery seems fine and ths disco turns over great with no problem.

It can crank well with weak battery, important is the voltage measured on the battery while cranking, if it drops below 10V then that battery is weak
