Just got a quote from an Indy (not gonna say which one just yet) to fit a replacement rear diff to my P38... £170 + VAT!!!

Now, I thought it was a relatively straightforward job... Undo rear prop UJ, undo calipers, undo hub carrier bolts, pull half shafts out a bit, undo 10 diff bolts, remove diff, put new one in, do everything back up... Am I missing something??

The 'mechanic' told me that "the half shafts have a habit of rusting stuck in the diff, it's a problem with P38s" - so the £170 + VAT was only an 'estimate'... At that point I said "thanks but no thanks" and put the phone down...

Am I way off base here, or was this Indy trying to fleece me?

Half shaft need to be totally withdrawn, leaving them resting on the oil seals will knacker them. Fitting new seals would be standard practice. Getting the half shafts back in without destroying the new seals is an art form. About two to two and a half hours on a ramp.
 
Ok fair enuff...

I could do it myself, but was just being a wimp as it's cold & rainy, and didnt really want to spend my rare days off stuck under my P38...
 
Seems like a fair price if it includes new h/shaft, diff seal and diff oil. With calipers off you should ask them to check them out (clean and slide, even new rubbers) and maybee new pads etc etc sometimes just a little bleeding of the rear only is a good idea too. Depends on what you want them to do. Diff only on cost. But brakes important too. What are the discs like?
 
By the way Clarky, and just before I forget, I found a complete schematic of the Clarion Stereo Head Unit online the other day.

It's only for the HK version, and as such has no internal amps for anything like that, but it does have the pinouts for the CD changer connection, and they are probably the same across the range?

I can also see where the connections are internally for the line level tape and Radio signals. Might be useful for when I build my iPod connector and charger....eventually.
