V8 on gas is as cheap on fuel as a deseisil.
Disco's weight two tons.... that's about three times as much as your average family estate car, they NEED a big engine to make them move..... desiesils just dont do that.
On gas, cleaner than a smelly oil burner.
TDi.... great engine...... for a TRACTOR!
Followed one yesterday... every time we came to a hill, I couldn't see where I was going, cos of the cloud of thick black smoke!
Eventually swapped cars so he could see how bad it was......
No.... No.... NO!
Had to use a crow bar to get my keys back!
After suffering an engine that 'supposedly' has SOooooooooo much "low dow torque"....
Where, exactly? Reckon it's all talk not torque! Darn thing couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding; thought I might have to use low box to do a hill start!
"similar power curves".... who conjoured THAT fantacy!
V8 has more torque at tick-over than a TDi has at peak... and the power trace is a nice round hump with loads of grunt stuffed every-bleddy where. 3.5, around 160bhp, 3.9, 180bhp. that's 50%+ more than any TDi, and over half of it'savailable right across the rev-range
TDi? Nothing at tickover, ruddy great ski-sliope up to 2K as the blower starts working...... then its all over.......
As for water?
Saw a TDi hydrauliced yesterday...... I thought these things were supposed to be 'imperviouse' to water? Obviousely NOT, it would seem!
Oh... and you can hear yourself think in a V8 without the desiesil tappet rattle or the din of two thousand dwarves mining tin in the bowles of the engine bay as you thrash the nuts of the thing to make it move, and waite for it to start burning its own sump oil through the blower..... rather more expensively than when a V8's cams go a bit 'flat'!
V8 works, which is why its still THE engine of choice for comping...... dont see many TDi powered trials buggies or ectreme challenge trucks, do you?
Straight face argument to the missus?
With Gordon Blimey at the helm, EVERY damn thing is going to be expensive to run.... may as well get something useful for our money! V8's go, TDi's dont, and when they go wrong, you CAN fix them.... TDi just chuck it away, 'cos the price of a new head, new injectors and a new turbo is more than another engine! V8, you can normally get away with just a new head-gasket or two at a tenner a piece, or a new cam and tappets at about £150.... a complete engine rebuild on one is LESS than replacing the turbo and head on a TDi........ So, it's decided, V8 it is..... now lets talk about this new kitchen/concervatory/washing machine/hand-bag (delete as appropriate) you wanted.....
Probably cost you a new kitchen......... but hey, its worth it!
