Help needed 1974 landrover 88 series 3 diesel.i stopped the engine with the pull cable and its come out of the barrel location linked to steering lock. I cant get it back in .ive tried rotation of the key and disconnecting the battery. But there must be an interlocking tab or something as the outer sheath of the cable will not enter and go back to the home position. Any help on this appreceated. Thanks brian

There are two small grub screws holding it in, one holds the sheath from the back and another holds or acts as a guide on the bit you pull.

thanks for that appreciated, can i get at these if i unscrew the centre dash and pull it up a bit, so theres no interlock with the ignition on the diesel, just these two grubb screws, thanks brian

Key has to be in the on position for pull to go all the way in. [ or may just go in with screws removed ] one or tother.

Managed to get the two screws out, tried with ignition on but cant get the outer sheath to go in more than about 1/2 inch. Looks like something is stuck in the way or not retracking with the key in the on position. Thanks. Im going to try and take a photo down the cable port to see if i can make out whats stopping it.

Could be coincidence but is there any interlock with this engine kill cable and the pre heater yellow light, ive just lost that, could be with poking about but obviously lost the supply to the preheaters for some reason. Just really concerned that ive missed a step and theres an interlock with the ignition with this cable not being in irs home position. Ie the diesel being isolated Any support appreciated. Thanks brian

Thisvis exactly whats wrong with mine, theres some interlock mechanical preventing the cable back in - see photo on the two links. Any more help gretly appreciated

There is a mechanical lock that prevents the pull going back in until the key is turned to the on position. Perhaps because it came out to far [ location screw lost perhaps] the lock pawl is now in the way for the pull shaft to go back in. I think one of the pics in post you found shows the pawl in the lock barrel.

Thanks yes. Agree, ill have a go tomorrow afternoon and see.if i can drive a tappered drift through to raise the paul, if i can do that ill make a tubular tapered tool with a split in to feed through in front if the cable shaft to get it back in. Thanks for all your helpnon here greatly appreciated thanks brian

Managed to get the pawl down. It went down using a scredriver as a lever, i removed the steering wheel first for access. It stayed down once forced, so i was able to get the cable sheath back in. One point worth noting with this pawl in the up position you cant turn the key to the glow plug heat position. Which makes sense. So im going to put this back together for now with the mechanical pull kill for the engine.i will probably change the wiri g shortly and use a landrover 90 set up with ne ignition switch and lock +solenoid diesel cut off. I makes sense to me as you dont want this cable problem happening on a drive. Thabks again for all you help greatly appreciated
