So I've had my F2 over a year now.

Its been running lovely, the only imperfection being squeaky brakes. When I got it, it had just had new brakes fitted, so thought it was probably just bedding in. Roll on a year and they are still 'bedding in' and squeaking

I have been maintaining it well since purchasing it, when it has needed fuel, I have filled it up. So I have been keeping on top of things.

Anyway, today I jumps in, puts the key in and am greeted by a "Low Coolant" message on the dash. So, first things first, where's the bonnet release? After a year! Checks the coolant and its just above Min, so toodles into work.

This evening, the van I'm working on is whisked away for a service and the cleaners are still in the last 1 I've got to check over, so I brings the Freelander into a service bay to top up the coolant. I does that, I hope its the pink stuff cos that's what went in, when you're colour blind you can never be to sure. Checks the oil, PAS fluid, all OK. Has a look round the engine bay, all looks OK.

So thought I'd have a look at the squeaky brakes.

Has a look at the fronts. They're bootiful. Plenty of pad, lovely shiny disk, no lip, bootiful.

Has a look at the rears, and I'm looking at this....

The disk is dull and pitted, there's not really a lip, but the pads are obviously miles off touching the inside or outside of the disk. There is pad there.

I can only think the wrong pads are in there, or is there supposed to be such a big gap on the edges? Why is it so pitted and terrible looking?

I think I've found the reason for my squeaks! But why is it like this? Any ideas?

I’d say defo wrong pads…
For reference, here’s my back brake… (MY09)

Obviously not touching enough, is there a handbrake adjuster?
Excuse my ignorance, I've not delved into how the brakes work on the F2. But does the handbrake operate on the calipers/pads or are there not shoes inside the disc/drum/hub jobbie that it would apply?

Give it a new set of disks too, yer tight git!
Nah, I'll help a Cantabrian to pay for his kids school shoes rather than give money to a Chinese iron works.

I should think the rears do a lot less work than the fronts and will last a long time anyway.

Anyone know the original and minimum thickness of the rear disks? I won't have them skimmed if they're getting towards the minimum.

Support your roots.

But unfortunately, they didn't do Freelander disks :D

Rears;
302mm diameter
Thickness new 12mm
Thickness at service limit 10mm
Max runout 0.08mm

Looks like wrong pads. In which case the anti-squeal spring is either missing or can’t work properly.
(I’ve always called these longish flat spring things anti-squeal springs, could be wrong).
No point in not replacing the disks as they will have worn to conform to the wrong pad (if they are wrong ‘uns). Play safe, fit new disks, pads, and while you’re at it, a handbrake service kit.
