Hi All Fans,

just a quick question for all of view who have attempted to redo your interior headlining: did you try to replace the original headlining with wood?

let me explain, I have a commercial 90 with rear windows and obviously do not have the side interior trim panels. while I am it, do you think it will be a good idea to just make them out of wood panels covered in carpet after sound proofing? I was thinking is something like 5-10mm thick panels.

I think it is doable and a lot less expensive that the Masai or britpart where they quoted me more than a 1000 pounds for the lot.

what's your ideas on this?

Thanks

I recovered the original headlining, if doing it again I would copy what people have done on here and stuck foam direct to the roof and then covered that with material.
Good glue is the secret ingredient.

I also recovered the original but I used the original covering rather than replacing and just removed it and reglues it into place. I second the need for a good quality glue. that is what makes it!

They regularly come up second hand, although not cheap, That is where i got mine when i converted my hardtop to a station wagon.

thanks, but do you think it is doable with some wood panels? I will try with cardboard first to see

It's an impossible question to answer. Is it doable with wood? For me? no because I'm terrible at wood working. Is it possible for a carpenter with 30yrs experience. Probably a breeze.
How good are you at woodworking. There's your answer.

What do you want from your 90? What use?

I like @lynall s suggested solution.

If you want more then find a decent replacement cos using wood won’t be easy, IMO

Thanks. I think I will give it a try to using paper to make a template first. I looked at it and it seams that the rear is pretty strait. No curves. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Make ure you post lots of photos. I would agree with the above that it depends on the finish you want to achieve and what your expectations are. there have been some very competent member make some very nice dash pieces from wood on here so I am sure the roof lining is also possible. But for me it would just end up as a flat panel which is a long way form what the roof lining actually is. Even the rear section of the roof lining still has curved down to the roof gutter (unless you mean the flat piece above the rear door that I have never had in any land rover!). Also wood is no longer that cheap so I would carefully cost it up as you may find it doesn't save you that much money for a huge investment in time and effort.
