Am I hallucinating or has my Landy finally driven me mad ? I wanted to check my injection pump timing but when I looked in the wading plug hole to bring the slot round to lock the flywheel there was no ring gear ! Only a smooth surface .. what the heck is going on ?

Its a "wading plug ole"
The timing ole is in the housing a bit further forward, so lines up with the ring gear.

It's a 300tdi .

Yes that's right. There is two slots, make sure you get the right one, also the hole for the timing pin needs to be about 11 o'clock in the injection pump.

That's on a 200tdi but guess 300tdi is similar.

I know about the two slots , what I can't figure out is where my ring gear has gone ! Looking in the hole it's just a smooth surface , no teeth .

If it had teeth how would you see a slot?

It’s the wading plug ole that’s why, you said it yourself.

Fair point . It is quite possible my Landy has driven me mad ! I'll get someone to turn the engine by hand while I lie underneath and watch for the slot to come round . It's a long time since I last did this so memory could be a bit hazy ..

Before you turn the engine, have you loosened the fuel pump bolts - if so -STOP and check the order in which you should proceed

I haven't gone near the pump yet . It was just a bit of confusion about what I should be seeing in that hole . I'll check out the Trailer Fitter's Toolbox video again on how to check and adjust the pump .

I'm sure I have the timing pin tool, along with a load of other special tools that I no longer need which I'll probably offer up for sale, once allowed
