Hi all not long had my disco td5 so have decided to change the oil and filters, got underneth but found the sump plug has been rounded off thought about welding a large nut over the top. Would the heat from the welding do any long term damage to the engine block? Thanks

nah! yer should be fine, just watch yer dint build up too much heat while yer doing it. i take it you've tried a pipe wrench on it?

Go and buy a new one before romoving the old one. Then get some stilsons or similar on the old one to undo it

I'll get a new one first like you say, I've only tried whilst sat on the drive at home i'll get a bit more creative tomorrow at work, welding will be the last resort thanks for the ideas.

Next and every time you refit the plug, wind two turns of plumber's PTFE tape round the threads.

It will seal better, need less torque to seal, and will come out easier next time.

better still buy the ptfe gas tape (yellow reel) it a one wrap tape much thicker than ptfe and it seals better.

Inside a computer hard drive are some of the most powerful ferrite magnets known. If you got an old HDD lying about take it apart and stick one of these little kidney magnets to your new sump plug. The TD5 oil centrifuge does a good job of removing most of the crud, but I stuck one on mine for the hell of it and it did collect a few particles...

I tried that but I seem to be having trouble getting access to some of my files now.
