looking at the parts book, it seems the layshaft and second gear pair are the only internal differences with the mainshaft/layshaft gears for suffix d and suffix c.

the D layshaft has a shoulder vs the "split" ring on the C layshaft,

the D layshaft second gear has a wider anular slot than the C to accomodate the larger diameter shoulder on the D layshaft vs the "split" ring on the C layshaft. dogs, teeth and size seem to be the same.

mainshaft, bearings, thrust washers, bushes, 1st gear , 3rd gear and pinion/input etc seem to be all the same part numbers

so is it possible to use a D layshaft and D second gear pair in an everything else C gearbox?

the reason to do this is a stronger D layshaft and better availabilty of oem D parts

thanks!

Suffix D boxes have coffin shaped teeth on the gears for the synchro to stop them jumping out.
So your match up for 2nd gear synchro would be wrong.
Suffix D input pinion and gear are a matched pair also.

true with series 3 boxes,not with 2

its possible

thanks all for the replies. yes, series 2a not 3, so no 1/2 synchro

is the D layshaft a good upgrade on the C? I guess Land Rover thought so at the time :)
the upgrade in my opinion was the changing of front l/s bearing from suffix b on, i have seen a few bust suffix d shafts were i presume a shock load has snapped the lugs but id think lugs are stronger than the split ring halves
