TTa, rah tarah,tarrahh. :confused: I hope that gets the cavalry ! Help please...... A whirring/ grating sound developed whilst towing my fairly weighty twin axle caravan. I've had something similar in the past in other motors which turned out to be a wheel bearing. After unhitching the 'van the sympton disappeared so I suspected the 'van wheel bearings. I've just put the 'van on its stands and the hubs and bearings are sound. There's nothing happening presently with my r rvr P38, so I'm hoping you guys can give me a clue where to start looking as I'm reluctant to hitch the van up again without getting to the bottom of this. Is the sound constant all the time when you are towing?? First thing I thought of when you posted this was a worn/stretched transfer box chain but if its constant all the time you are towing then that wouldn't be it.

I have a slightly dodgy front wheel bearing on the drivers side and that whirrs away as im going along. If I get someone else to drive and sit on the passenger side I cant hear it so Im convinced its the bearing but havent had it sorted yet.

If the sound is constant with driving does it change with speed?? That is does it get louder or more high pitched as you go faster??

Thanks for the thoughts, Wills. The sound developed 110 miles into a 150 mile journey. It came on at 55mph/60mph/65mph ish. If I took my foot off the gas the note changed and it quietened.Below these speeds I noticed nothing. I didn't do much analysis whilst driving as I felt sure when I got back I could make a further diagnosis, but it's shut up since. I've since travelled at greater and lesser speeds unhitched without a murmer. I have pulled the van a few miles, but not at speed, and heard nothing. I've given the r rvr wheels a good waggle and not a whisker. The car's done 107k. obviously chewing up motorways as it's only been on the road 5 years. Does that help? regards P.S
 
Try the diff drop the oil it to a clean bucket and see if you got bits wont hart puting new oil in the diffs if yiu towing a big caravan i dune mine when i got the car to be safe just a tthought mind???????????
 
Well, chasps. I've drained the axles, transfer box and gearbox off and refilled. The service history said that a landrover main agent had serviced it at 98,000 miles thus my logic of only topping these up when I serviced it myself. The stuff that came out of the front axle was amazing. The first flow was akin to a slurry you'd see in an old morris minor rocker box. Then it turned to just dirty oil. The last was a jellyish slurry type of stuff-charcoal grey. I had to be creative with probes and jacks to get the last of it out. The magnetic drain plug was a sculpture in iron filings. However, apart from this and the disgusting mess aforementioned, there was no other debris I could see or feel. I must say, the motor seemed to have liked all this and drove perceptably smoother. No noise from anywhere, though. Does this tell you anything, I wonder? Thanks again, men. regards P.S

I put this stuff in my gearbox its brill give it a try Lucas Oil Products (UK) - Heavy Duty & High Performance Lubricants

 
As it happens, those people have a unit on the factory estate nearby. I used their stuff throughout. I didn't realise it was rated in any way, though, I just used it as it was easily available. Anyway, having done as much as I can of the basics, I'll see how the next expedition goes. One of the previous ones ended on a RAC tow truck. This damned car! Why didn't I know about this forum before I purchased ! regards all, P.S
