Hi peeps, Hope all went well over the last couple of days. Just got my "OEM" thermostat through the post from a LR indy supplier, stripped the old one out then looked in the box. It's as much oem as I am !!! No ball valve !! So, has anyone had experience of this make, do I fit as is, do I drill a vent hole or pack it up and send it back? Note the STC3338 number on the box, is this legal? The reason for changing, motor running cool, the thermostat was not seating properly when cold

Morning Alan. You could drill a 2.5 mm hole in it i suppose. OEM merely means it was or is supposed to be made by or to the same spec as the original parts maker, but it is a misused term open to interpretation. Personally i would only fit a genuine part in this case. This is what i fitted to mine. Not cheap but gives a certain peace of mind. Put the old one back and send the other one back then buy a proper one.
I think 85 is correct but could be wrong as I haven't checked, seems to be when mine opens using a probe.

Thanks for the advice Tony and Keith, it's exactly what I would post but you think differently with the motor stripped down. The supplier is away till 6th Jan so I will get a proper one ordered. Early New Years greetings

80 degrees is correct for the M51. Yeah and thanks had a reasonable time under the circumstances. Sue lost her dad two weeks ago.

As an aside, mine overheated about a year after I fitted, from memory, was a generic stat.

When the guys at my specialist did an investigation they told me the stat seemed totally "popped" was I think the expression they used, it was the only evidence they could find of a problem.

I know it's a pain but as the guys have said, put the right one in.

Alan, if it's running cool, check the viscous fan coupling has not locked up. don't forget to check the new stat in boiling water before you fit it. I know I'm telling grandmother how to suck eggs.

Sorry to hear that Tony, know how she feels, as you know I lost mine a couple of months ago. The old stat isn't seating when cold, checked it along with the new one and they both opened at the same time so I can only assume that there was not enough restriction to the waterway when cold. It took ages for the needle to climb just out of the blue on the gauge.

It took ages for the needle to climb just out of the blue on the gauge.

She is taking it fairly well it was not unexpected. He has been bed ridden for a couple of years and had full blown dementia. If you kept a dog in those conditions you would be in court. It's about time the law was changed in extreme situations like that.

I couldn't agree more, mine was in a home with dementia, had a fall, taken to hospital and was sent back to the home with a broken hip and no pain relief. Two days later they found he also had a broken elbow!! He was dead within the week.

More or less the same thing with Jack. He had a fall in what is laughingly called a care home at £600.00 quid a week. Broke his hip, was bed ridden after that and totally out of it. Nursing home wanted £1000.00 a week, so Sue's sister brought him home, had nurses every day and lasted about a year. This bloke fought for his country, worked all his life, never claimed anything off the state, had his own home. So he had to pay for everything. If he had been on the dole all his life and in a council house he would have had everything for nothing. Really boils my **** that does.

How spooky, he was a Jack as well. Everything you said applied to him. He was a D Day dodger, served in Sicily, Italy (was at Casino when it fell), Austria and Germany with the "Skins". Bet he never thought he would get treated the way he was.

Well I have contacted the thermostat supplier today and they said that what they supplied is a Premier quality part with a two year guarantee and that the one I took out (sent photo of both t/stats) was a cheap quality aftermarket one, NOT. They said they have sold over 30 in the last 8 weeks so has any forum members bought one?
