wrong all wrong............... need to brush up before you give advice
Nickle rod is the way for steel to cast iron.
I haven't seen any wrong advice from anyone so far. Your good self included.
The fact is, cast iron, especially old cast iron is so unpredictable in its manufacture/structure, welding it can be a nightmare. Sometimes we follow all the proper procedures, use the "correct" rod etc etc and it still cracks.
He just likes having a go at people as he has prostate problems like the rest of America![]()
No Doc you said 7018 welding rod and that was the wrong advice, plain and simple.
You can use a 7018 so it's not wrong it's just you being closed minded
not on cast iron :whoosh: Show me where any manufacture of 7018 rod saying it can/recommended use on cast iron.
rather inconclusive test. weld prep was crap, needs to be close to 100% v grove to gain total weld, not a 3/8 like he showed. And it will break again, the test he did was ****, but it would impress those with little or no knowledge of welding.
Doubt he holds any welding licenses at all. When you have your permit to weld on 1,200/1,500 psi steam systems, along with pressure hull (submarines) and air craft frames for jet fighters, then I'll listen to your welding skills.
Other than that you are talking ****
we'll listen to you too when you have yours![]()
I do Doc. Did it for 20 years.
Just like you're a professional in every other occupation under the sun![]()
One job I haven't had was exterminator of vermin..... lucky for you as you would be at top of the list![]()
This fred got awful childish dint it
Right a few points spring to mind:
7018 can be used to weld cast along with many other metals. It might not be the super duper by the book way of doing it but that doesn't mean it can't be done. I'm sure once upon a time someone said walking in to a room and flicking a switch and instantly the room lights up can't be done either. The fact that it has been proven many times that it is possible to weld cast with 7018s kinda proves it can be done.
The fact that you don't know who ChuckE2009 is rather discredits what you say as he is coded and many welding companies get him to test their products. You only have to look through how much he has helped people with his welding videos to see that he must have some clue about what he is doing.
The fact that Doc linked the very video I had in mind is pretty cool!
RedHand probably has steam coming out his ears because of this massive thread hi-jack!!

You can with pure nickel rods but at £120 for a small box...
