you have got a timing case extended breather ?

This any help?

Timing belt misalignment (300TDi) Almost unknown on the 200TDi, very common on older 300s. The timing case is not strong enough and can be distorted if the precise sequence is not followed when building up the engine and fitting the injection pump. This puts the injection pump pulley very fractionally out of true, and the belt then rubs against the shoulder on the tensioner. It gradually wears until it is about half its original width, then breaks, often at only half the recommended change interval.
Land Rover recognised this problem quite early in the 300 TDi's life and introduced two modification kits, depending on the exact age of the engine. One includes a new timing case, and a redesigned tensioner, idler and crank pulley. The other consists of just the tensioner, idler and pulley. Not all engines were affected, and there are still a fair few 300s running the early tensioner setup with no problems. The only way to be sure is to remove the timing cover and have a look inside. If the timing case is full of black fluff and one edge of the belt has been worn away, you have an alignment problem.

i was also gonna say this its happened to my mates 300 and were changing the case to prevent it happening again, also use the original timing gear as the edge on the front is thicker compared to the replacement ones where the front plate breaks off

the pump issue is poor fitting of rear support bracket for pump if you dont nip all 4 bolts first tightening them can pull on the pump

Bugger  The amount of ****e you drive through it's gotta be worth sealing the timing case, fitting the wading plug and fitting an extended breather.

Without the breather when you hit the gunk the rapid cooling will pull it past the seal.....and that stuffs evil.

Thank fook fer non interference injuns....

there was a very loud definite snap eve guys 3 landrovers bk heard it I honestly thought I had driven over a branch:mad:

It shouldn't be tight enough to make that loud of a snap or a noise at all really last one that I witnessed go when I was in my mates truck there was no noise it just died
