Need some help with getting the old shocks off the front of my 90. I can not get the bottom nut to undo. Have tried holding the shock still with some monkey grip/stilson things but the bloody thing will not budge.

Any tips on how to shift the little bugger?? Dont a=have no way of heating the nut up and only have a basic tool kit!!!

Have been using a releasing spray on it for the last week in preperation for the job but this has not made no difference. They aint reverse threaded or anything are they??

Not enough space to get an angle grinder in there to be honest. Cant even get a socket in there and have to resort to using a spanner which I can not get no power on.

Ah, this brings back memories of the suspension swap on my old 300tdi Disco ;)
You can get an angle grinder in if you get it on axle stands under the chassis, support the axle on a trolley jack, wheels off, undo the top shock mount both sides and lower the front axle down to the ground.
You can then compress the shocks enough so you can lift the springs over the top of them which will allow you all the access you need to cut off the bottom of the shock.
Failing that use a large hammer and a sharp chisel and cut the nuts off with that

Just done mine. The left hand one was a nightmare ! WD40 had no effect. Nut-splitter wouldn't split the nut (not even enough room to get my BIG nut-splitter in), it just put holes in it. Chisel did the same. Drilled holes in it until my drill went blunt. Eventually came off with chain-wrench on the shock body, jammed against the chassis-rail, and me pushing mole-grips with my foot. There was hardly any nut left to hang-on, but hang-on it did.

I squirted WD40 on the right hand one every night for a week and it came off in about 10 minutes with a spanner on the nut and another on the bottom of the threaded shaft

Must admit, if I know i'm going to be doing a job on the landy that involves undoing nuts or bolts, I wire brush them and spray them everyday for about a week before I do the job.

Well, took me all day to do one front side. Finally got the bottom nut off after much cursing, banging and cut knuckles!! Look forward to doing the other side tomorrow now cos I got one wonky looking 90!!!

Gentlemen gentlemen it takes approx 5 minuites to undo even the most badly corroded shocker nut.

take a recip saw and cut down the centre of the shocker and the nut. then spread the nut with a screwdriver/drift/chisel repeat for bottom nut, and the jobs a good un..

On another note - I used my standard land rover jack to do this job today (with axle stands). It is the first time i have used it and even when it was fully wound up, the wheel would not lift clear of the ground. That was with standard suspension and 265/75 -16 tyres. Bit of a useless bit of kit really as I would not even be able to use it to change a wheel if I got a puncture. Am I missing something here or are they just a waste of space?

There one up from useless lol buy yourself a highlift jack

I changed my rear shockers a few months back. I had to use a hacksaw in the end to cut the shocker off at the bottom. Can you get a hacksaw (full size) in to cut the front ones the same? I wish I had a grinder! Took me about 15 mins to cut through each side as I had to cut through the rubber mounts to get to the part of the shocker I needed to cut. Ached a bit after that

Well I managed to get the front done today and have changed the rear shocks but not the springs as the spring retainer bolts are seized solid and rounded off so I now have a wonky landy which is lifted at the front and not at the back!! This job has been a nightmare from start to finish (and i'm not finished yet!!).
Whats the best way to get the bolts out that hold the spring retainers?? Cant seem to fit a hacksaw or grinder in there really.

Blowtorch, get nuts red hot and slice em off with a hammer and chisel ;)
