Can someone explain how low range and diff lock work on the P38 auto? What is a viscous coupling? Is an auto transfer box the same as a manual transfer box?

start again ,all p38 range rovers are equal 4wd ,instead of a center diff lock to give equal torque to both axles in slippy conditions it uses a viscous coupling which allows movement for cornering etc but locks diff without you needing to do anything ,both manual an auto transfer boxes have hi and low speed and are the same apart from input splines in epicyclic as output splines on gear boxes are different

Hill descent control on the P38 is a combination right foot and brain

p38 dont. low range is a better system imo, dont break discs so quick.

Just as a proper limited slip diff is better than traction control

Steep hill, muddy conditions - touch the brakes and you can get into a monumental slide.
Low range is better for hill decent. Third gear low range keep your foot off the brakes and let it slowly unwind down the hill.

Also traction control is better for an all round on road/off road car imho. 4 wheel TC on later p38's is awesome.

Limited slip diffs fitted in front/rear axles are noisy in operation (and expensive).
