I spent the last few days in Niigata Japan (country side) having fun in the snow, but the last day when refueling at the gas station an idiot there clean my windshield with a dirty sponge and succeed to make 7 "whipper" like scratch on the windshield (I have to inspect other windows as well). There are no really visible unless you have direct sunlight on you... So my question is simple, can we remove these scratches or at least attenuate them?

Something like jewellers diamond polish might work

Drag your finger nails across the screen. If you can feel your nails catching in the scratches then there's nothing you can do because it would take so much rubbing that it would remove enough of the glass to distort the view through the screen.
If you can't feel them then it's worth trying.

In the past I have used G3 or another type of cutting paste you can get hold of. Give it a good scrub with a soft rag and that should do the trick.

G3 might be a bit aggressive, in the past I've had some success on side windows with G10 finishing compound. It's not as aggressive as G3 but does take some effort to get the scratches out.

Does your insurance not cover windscreens? If it does then give the screen a good clout with a hammer. Only one mind you so make it a good one. Replacemt screen - no scratches. Job done

When I worked in the glass trade (many moons ago) we used to remove minor scratches using a small piece of wood with a rounded end (broom handle cut to about 8 inches) this was left to soak in water. As a rubbing compound we used jewellers rouge mixed with a little water to form a paste.

The technique is to start at one end of the scratch and rub gently ACROSS the scratch from side to side. If the scratch is very minor (as I suspect your's are from your description) you can use a wool polishing bonnet on a power drill but apply plenty of the rouge paste (use it wetter) and keep everything wet - this is a much more messy method as the power drill will "throw" it off and can make quite a mess.

What actually happens is that the surface of the glass will warm up slightly and as glass is actually a liquid (I know that sounds wrong, but it is true) it will gradually fill in the scratch. Heavier scratches can also be dealt with using this technique, but as someone already mentioned above ... there can be some distortion left if the job is done well.

Then polish everything off using powdered chalk.

Well it does but next year I will have to pay a premium... Japan maybe at the leading edge in some areas but in others... they are amazingly behind the rest of the world.

I will dedicate a post one day for that but when it comes to car Japan is just plain crazy for price, maintenance and insurance. Just to give you a rought idea the cheapest price I found for four joint ball (two top, two bottom) was around 100,000 Yen or £780.

Ok, I went to see several stores and professionals. All tell me the same thing... It can be done but we do not advise it! My English is not perfect and I am not sure if you will understand what I mean, but basically polishing the glass to make the scratch disappear will result in too much viewing distortion. They advise to left the windshield like this since as it is there are not that much of a problem (and I agree)... So I will have to leave with it... Indeed they are not really disturbing.... I know where they are and I just hate the fact that they exist.

Take it the Japanese equivilant of Tescos and I am sure some woman with a shopping trolly will donate a few extra scratches along the doors. It won't cure the scratches on the windshield but it might take your mind off them...

But you will be amazed how cars are clean here, when a car has a "bump" or scratch you can be sure that it will fixed pretty soon.

Cant say I've ever done this myself but I have known people to get fine scratches out with brasso metal polish but I would try it on a seperate peice of glass before tackling the windsheild

I have heard of using toothpaste to clean and remove scratches on plastic windows. Might b a very cheap thing to try.
