I have a 2005 TD4 Freelander, and am having an intermittent problem which is now worsening. Basically it's pinking on acceleration, and now has a weird grinding/ rattling noise to go with it! I had to drive about 200 miles in it yesterday and this started after about 75 miles, really scary. It was getting gradually worse - then suddenly stopped and car drove perfectly! Today problem has returned. Can't get it in the garage till next week for diagnostics, but am worried about driving it, wondering if anyone else had experienced similar?

Do you mean its struggling to accelerate? You could have a split, loose or disconnect intercooler hose?

it could be the valves that are hydrolic driven by oil when was your last oil change and was it correct 10/40

It seems to hold back a bit on acceleration, then the pinking starts, feels like some sort of fuel blockage, last oil change was August with service. Following some comments on here I have added Millers Diesel Power eco max to fuel and ran it down motorway, and it's handling much better. Pinking and weird noise gone, though still feels a bit sluggish on acceleration. Am going to add more when I fill it up. Will still get it checked out though. Thanks for replies!

take a look at the '2 stroke oil' thread. i've been adding 250ml per tank and my pinking has completely disappeared.... :D

regarding what chaser said about the crankcase breather, go for the fit and forget BMW one.
Also one of your injectors maybe causing the pinking
