RRS Sport 4.2sc 2005 Transmission Fault Error Codes

Hi All,

As mentioned in my previous post I am back in Range Rover ownership with a 2005 RRS 4.2sc.
It has quite a few faults that I am working through but would value your opinions/help with a few things?
The main issue is the car has the Transmission Error come up when you engage Drive.
I have scanned it with my icarsoft and I have the following errors.

p0056..oxygen sensor heater circuit bank 2 sensor 2 ( unrelated to transmission error I believe)
P0579..speed control multifunction imput A ?
B1c57…ignition relay circuit
Bib02..low frequency coil

I believe the transmission has two faults, one electrical and one gearbox related.
The error code that comes up when drive engaged stoping manual and sport mode.
However if you switch the lights on and then engage drive you have no errors and sport and manual mode work.
Assuming that when the lights are engaged the selector sources power from an alternative source?

The second issue I believe is mechanical and transmission related is I get a whiplash thud as it changes from 1st to 2nd gear, I have tried manual gear changes from 1 to 2 to 3 and it works so believe the transmission may need a fluid change or the megatronic needs servicing?
I have removed the passenger seat to access the wiring loom running the length of the passenger sil , this does not look to bad with no real bad water ingress however I managed to fix the central locking straight away rejoining two of the wires.

Sorry for the long post , hope someone with a similar experience can point me in the right direction

Forgot to add these additional errors come up on scan when you switch on lights and engage gear.
U0155..lost comms with cluster.
P081c..Park imput circuit
U0182…lost comms with front lighting module
U0159…lost comms with parking assist module

No idea really but I would be checking for bad earth connections, battery voltage at rest and with the engine running.

Checked the voltage at the battery yesterday at idle it was 13.94v.
Battery replaced by previous owner less than a month ago.
Did see another post on here about the earths especially the ones behind the cover of the osf wing.
Would like to take out the fusebox BCM behind the glove box and check for corrosion there, no water ingress Into the pollen filter housing though
 
Seen posts on other forums saying it was the green/pink wire that corrodes and breaks causing the transmission error code but I cannot see that wire in my loom wonder if the wiring colour may be different between models.
The previous owner also changed out the stick shifter , so that’s ticked off.
I definitely think wiring or module water ingress.
Car on my drive and Sorn so not my daily driver

Still have the transmission error coming up when drive engaged….

So far I have eliminated any broken wires or corrosion in the passenger sill wiring loom.


The previous owner replaced the stick selector.

Removed the TCM which had only minor corrosion on the pins and plug, which I have now cleaned.
Inside the TCM there was no sign of water ingress.

While I was removing the TCM I checked the two connectors at the ECM/ECU showed no corrosion but cleaned them anyway.

Put it back together and checked again, however same transmission error code when drive engaged.
Shows error code P081C
The lights on first then engage Drive shows no error of dashboard and I can engage sport mode and manual gears 123.
This then shows error U0155 when this method tried.

Can anyone help out with either previous experience or knowledge of the LR3/Sport ??

If there was corrosion in the connector, it can be very hard to remove all the stuff that causes tracking between pins.
 
It cleared up pretty well with a toothbrush and contact cleaner,
Was hopefully spend some time on it tomorrow.
Assume that that when Drive is engaged a signal is sent to the TCM.
Not sure if the wiring goes directly from shifter connection to TCM or does it run via the BCM fusebox?
 
Must confess have found these files very useful for cleaning terminals , was very careful not to be too aggressive along with some electrical cleaner

If the gearbox adaptations have been reset by previous owner or your self that would explain the harsh shifting its a learning gearbox and needs a fair bit of driving for it to LEARN your style of driving.
I can't help with the fault code but I think your on the right path thinking electrical the gap tool would proberly be better a complete reset of the gearbox and cars systems just may cure it .
 
Reading up on a few forums …i believe it’s a voltage supply issue to the gear shifter if the headlight trick works, so will be looking at the fuses on the BCM fusebox.

The other thing I am unsure of is the lamps/leds on the gear selector are they supposed illuminated on the sport like the L322 ?
I know the dashboard shows you what gear you have selected but I have no illumination on the shifter PRND ?
Can anyone clarify this please

As I said in post #3, headlights affecting things is possibly a symptom of a bad earth.
 
Just thinking about the gear selector are they interchangeable between all the L320s irrespective of engine size ?

The one on my supercharged is gear selector 6h32-7Z370 , I can’t see the supercharged gear selector on the net or eBay, it shows the 2.7 and the 3.6 but not the 4.2.

Wonder if the previous owner may have swapped out with the wrong one

Hi

Plus 1 about ensuring ur earths are ok , Are u worried about the gear lever interlock system, the engine will start if it’s working

Out of curiosity as u change gear does the same come up on ur instrument panel , plus are ur interior lights working if not plse check fuse 57 from behind the glove box plse , thks

Hi,
Checked the earths at the A and B pillar bases have yet to check inside the passenger wheel arch.
I could see corrosion on the fuses at the BCM fusebox.
Just removed it to clean all the contacts and check the connections for water ingress.

*********SUCCESS************

I finally cracked it….
I did not have the permanent 12v on pin 8 of the gear shifter connector.
12v on the BCM fusebox so a disconnect on the purple/blue wire between the two.
The 12v leaves the BCM via pin 45 of the large blue connector bottom of the fusebox and onto the purple/wire.
I cut this wire 6 inches after the blue connector and ran an interception wire to the other cut end of the wire in the sil loom.
The gears now illuminate in PRND and sport/manual mode works with no transmission error.
