Hi guys, new here as maybe stupidly got rid of my old bulletproof 300tdi and replaced it with a problematic Disco 3 2.7 tdv6 which is a non runner. Yes it may have been a bad idea but life is a gamble 😆
It basically cranks fine but won't fire or even run on the dreaded easy start (don't shoot me) weirdly there are no codes present as I have snap on ethos reader. Well there were a couple in there but I cleared them.
I had p0403 egr circuit , p0046 boost solenoid, p0495 high fan speed, p0622 generator field, p138e boost control senor A.
I checked for fuel up top with the little tyre valve do da and its seems present.
Battery when fully charged turns over fine but doesn't seem amazing as won't last long so got another one coming in the morning.
Previous owner had garage check belts and confirmed ok but beginning to doubt it.
Was thinking of compression test next to rule out serious issues....
The fact that it won't run on easy start leads me to think it's unlikely to be anything simple like crank sensor or injectors/fuel pump, but correct me if I'm wrong as I'm not used to this modern stuff as I restore VW Campers for a living 😆
Any pointers as to where to go next please?
🤔

Cheers

Back to basics, is there fuel getting up to the engine? there is a tyre valve type of cap on a schraeder valve on top of the engine, either in front or behind the oil filter. turn on the ignition, within 20 seconds press down the centre of the valve (with rags around it!) you should get non-aerated fuel coming out, if it's aerated, repeat until it's not. It will not start with any air in the LP fuel line.

If it doesn't fire on easy start, it could point to a cam timing issue, which is a known weakness on these engines.

But surely that aside, would it not at least cough on easy start, even with no fuel?

There's a long way for it to go.... chances are unless you remove the charge air hose in front of the throttle body, it'll never get anywhere near the cylinders in sufficient quantity to do anything - and that doesn't mean go mad with it.
You seem to be getting confirmation bias, I suggest you take a step back and check the basics first.

OK, yeah fair comment, I'll go back to.basice first. Cheers

Was it just 'fuel' or fuel under pressure? when you turn the ignition on, can you hear the tank pump running? it's in line with the OSR door opening.

Just popped down to the workshop to double check but pump is coming on and with ignition on you get a clean, steady low pressure stream of diesel from the valve when depressed. I gave it two rounds of glow and it almost half coughed 😆

Can you measure the fuel pressure? it needs to be 0.5bar or better. I've had quite a few noisy in-tank fuel pumps and / or blocked pre & post pump filters cause low fuel pressure and non-start issues in the past.
May also be worth drawing off a sample & checking for contamination.
What MY is it? it was possible to mis-connect the early fuel filters, generally this led to a P2290 DTC but that only happened once it was running, a lot of DTC's are suppressed / not set until the engine is detected as running.
If you can get someone to crank the engine, look down the oil filler neck to see if the camshaft is rotating smoothly, i've seen a couple where the pulley bolts have sheared from the camshaft flange due to over-tightening at belt change. In both cases, replacement pulley & bolts were all the parts needed.

OK thanks, I will check oil filler tomorrow. As far as I know it was driving fine and just cut out and has never restarted. Sorry what is MY and DTC? Didn't have that code present and it seems to be an injector low pressure code.. thanks
