    Success Story, Non-Return Valve

I've been driving a new-to-me 1999 Discovery 2 TD5 for about two months, manual transmission, and I've had a horrible time in city jams. The engine was just rebuilt prior to my purchasing, new heavy duty clutch and fuel air mixture adjusted after injector seals were replaced, but nevertheless I...

Disco 2 TD5 Rebuild? Advice Welcome

Thanks Stanleysteamer, I will gladly accept pats on the back and good-lucks as I jump off the cliff of Land Rover insanity once more.

Disco 2 TD5 Rebuild? Advice Welcome

Anyone have a recommendation for live oil temp gauges for this TD5?

Disco 2 TD5 Rebuild? Advice Welcome

I clarified with the mechanic and he said the heads have never been skimmed, he only polished them during the rebuild. My mistake. They’ll look at them when we take it apart to see if anything needs done with the heads, but for now, due to age, abuse and the symptoms, I’m just going to go ahead...

Disco 2 TD5 Rebuild? Advice Welcome

The mechanic was saying that the fifth cylinder closest to the bulkhead is too tight for his kit fit.

Disco 2 TD5 Rebuild? Advice Welcome

Good tips all, very much appreciated. No one here in Kampala has the kit to do the full 5 cylinder compression, I’ve asked around, so is it still worth it to do just the four cylinders? The heads have been skimmed before, I wonder if they would even have enough for another skim? I like the...

Disco 2 TD5 Rebuild? Advice Welcome

I’m driving a 99 TD5 Discovery 2 manual that just had two significant overheats, both times due to coolant hoses bursting, and it’s looking like piston rings are shot. Excessive oil coming out the breather hose, MAF fouled due to it, very weak at low range (fine on highway, though), even to the...

Disco 2 TD5 Stalled in Traffic

The update is that the crankshaft sensor and multiplug and wires are completely soaked in fresh oil, and the path is clearly from the engine breather hose. They’re going to clean it all up for now, we’ll see what that does. Definitely due to the engine overheats. In the meantime, I’ll be...

Disco 2 TD5 Stalled in Traffic

Fantastic bit of knowledge, thank you guys for sharing! Makes sense to me, the MAF killing it like that seemed strange but I deferred my judgment. The MAF is dead nevertheless so replacing that might help with some low powering issues, right? I am taking the Rover to the mechanic’s shop today...

    Air Con Pipe Fittings

I seem to be entering a largely unexplored realm for most Land Rover owners. I’ll post information as I come across it but for now, I’m thinking the best course is to purchase the a/c pipes that connect to the compressor, as these are common, and they have the correct fitting to enter the rear...

Disco 2 TD5 Stalled in Traffic

Also, there was a Crank Sensor High code historically logged, can’t remember what the number was, but he didn’t seem concerned about it.

Disco 2 TD5 Stalled in Traffic

Mechanic finally came, and the MAF was reading 0.03v. The inside of the air intake tube around the sensor was coated in oil. Mechanic claims the backflow of oil through the breather tube (which appears to have killed the MAF) is due to a piston ring not sealing correctly, due to a recent couple...

    Air Con Pipe Fittings

Does anyone know what type and size fittings the air conditioning pipes are for a Disco 2? I’m assuming they’re British measurements, BSPP and BSPT? I’ve retrofitted rear air conditioning in a 1999 Discovery 2 TD5 S (originally a barebones white, UN model), and I have everything wired in...

Disco 2 TD5 Stalled in Traffic

Thanks, superb write-up sierrafery. I’m getting 18.8 reading of the fuel pump fuse on engine start-up, dropping to 17.7 gradually after it warms up. Pump was changed about five years ago, according to the mechanics.

Disco 2 TD5 Stalled in Traffic

One other symptom I just remembered that was strange: After stalling each time, the engine would continue to shake as if something was still going, and it wouldn’t stop until I turned the ignition off.

Disco 2 TD5 Stalled in Traffic

My vehicle is a 1999 Discovery 2 TD5, with a newly rebuilt engine and lots of other work done to it. Drove around town all day yesterday, several stops, then on the way home, with lots of sitting in hot traffic (I’m in Kampala, Uganda), vehicle threw the CEL for a split second, ran rough for...
