So the pipe on the bottom back of the header that's pumping up is connected via a rubber hose to the solid metal pipe under the inlet which I belive comes from the oil cooler?

With the cap removed It still flows up and over! The egr cooler is removed and the two pipes have been connected together. If this has any effect but this was done 3 years ago. I have just replaced the tank and coolant so maybe now it's just visible as the old tank was filthy

Whip the crank sensor out and spray it with brake cleaner. I had a similar problem and I orderd a new one. Tried cleaning it and that was 6 months ago. New one still in the draw!
