Defintely sounds like under-dash fuseboard / IDM to me. I had very similar effects a couple of years ago. The circuit board was very badly corroded on the bottom edge. A good used replacement sorted it out.

I have one fitted to mine. It comes on for a few seconds when starting after being parked, then occasionally if I'm on a steep slope / rough ground. It gives me a nice warm feeling that things are working as they should. Probably totally misplaced.......

The rain does come down through the pillar. I made a little hat for mine out of a 1 litre oil bottle to keep the worst off. I've always thought it a weird notion to have water draining down through the pillars especially as the lamp connectors are there. But I've never heard of it causing any...

So do you just lever it out? Mine's quite scratched and rubbing down and re-lacquering is on my long term to-do list. But as I've had the Disco for 8 years it's obviously not a priority!

The easy way top get the cover off is just to spin it with the wheel brace. Comes straight off IME.
