Yes, that runs very close to the sump and often gets worn through. Mine dumped all its oil on a Caravan Club pitch which did not endear me to the wardens...... The good news is that it's an easy and cheap fix.

Some people have reported trouble with the loom that passes over the top of the box to the XYZ getting frayed and shorting out. May be worth a look,

Those motors are a pain as the output shaft tends to seize up which can cause the gears to strip as you've found. Worth putting plenty of grease on the shaft when you rebuild it.

That's the first thing I'd check as well. Those symptoms sound like low oil level (a bit like what you get when most of it has disappeared out through the pipes you mention).

I just took mine off as I was fed up with the OBD socket disappearing behind it...... I just cable tied the socket to a convenient bracket. I seem to remember I chucked it away otherwise you'd be welcome to it/

I used to leave mine off in the winter on my Disco 1 and ended up having to replace the compressor as the seals went - I was told because it needs to run regularly. I just keep it switched on on the D2.

I've never actually been sure my mirror heaters work. Should the lenses actually feel warm?

In the 9 years and 60,000 miles I've had my D2 it's never needed the glowplugs even when the Beast from the East was around. Just get in, turn the key and it springs into life....... I'm probably doing it all sorts of damage and probably if I was in Dracula country it may be different....

......And even more easily snaps back out of place.... I've cable tied mine to a convenient bracket (and left the kick plate off as even my feet aren't big enough to do any damage down there).

Are you sure you haven't lost the gearbox oil via the cooler pipes separating?

P doesn't usually appear in the display on mine till I push the lever forward as I described.

Have you tried pushing the gearlever hard forward (ie making sure it's fully in "P")? Mine frequently does what you describe - the XYZ switch is very slightly out of adjustment. It doesn't bother me but it's caught one or two people out when I've let them drive my car. I see it as a minor...

It might help if people posted their engine number and whether or not the bolt was loose. I'll start the ball rolling: 10P06184B - bolt tight.

I had mine checked and it was tight but at least I have peace of mind (on that score at least).
