Thanks Fery, I'd seen that but it's a fairly superficial explanation (on p424 of my copy of RAVE BTW!). The document you linked to earlier was a generic one describing all sorts of glowplugs and I wasn't sure which type we have fitted or how applicable it was.
Mine has always started in all weathers without using the glow plugs at all. And it runs as sweet as a nut after 170,000 miles..... No visible smoke on starting and as long as I leave it running for 20 seconds to get the oil round the auto box none on take-off either.
Just my experience not any...
I've kept a running total of every litre of diesel that's gone into my auto D2 for 70,000 miles. And I get 22 mpg over that period - about 25% pulling a 1400 kg caravan.
Well I cruise at 70 on the motorway. Interestingly, the mpg with the van on the back is only a couple worse than it is solo. Of course I'm then driving at 60 rather than 70.....
It's been consistent over 10 years and I have changed the MAF at one point during that time. My brother did once...
I've never got anything like that. Over 70,000 miles, checking at each fill, it's slightly over 22 mpg. That does include towing a caravan for about 20% of the time, otherwise a fair bit of town work and driving at the speed limit elsewhere.
There's no way you can stop exhaust fumes getting in other than setting the climate control (assuming you have it) to recirculating - even then it's not 100%.
There is an attempt at a pollen filter across the air intake plenum at the rear of the bonnet opening but even when in good condition...
It sounds as though the MOSFETs did take something else with them. Why not go for a replacement ecu - plenty on ebay for under £200. Seems better than scrapping it.
