shove a hose pipe in it.

The idea of reverse flushing the rad is that anything stuck in it tends to be in the top of the cores. Pushing it the other way often dislodges the crap and washes it out. I didn't make myself very clear, when I said gently running water, I really meant at much less pressure than a jet...

shove a hose pipe in it.

Definitely not a pressure washer, unless you fancy screwing up the cores. A hosepipe running gently is fine. It's best to flush it backwards, i.e. from the bottom hose fitting. Is there a reason you need to flush it? If not, it's best to leave well alone.

    Automatic choke stuck on

Yes, it must be for the 2.5 or 2.5TD 19J engine. They're the only ones with the glow plug feed directly from the ignition switch. If in doubt message the seller before buying with the details of your vehicle, they should be able to advise you that it's correct or not. It'll pay to change the...

What have you done to your Landie today.

Thought to myself, "it's time to buy some hypoid oil, ATF, and fill up the grease gun." Next week some time, I'll be underneath the bitch and draining and refilling all her orifices:)

    Automatic choke stuck on

:)It's a choke symbol purely 'cos LR designed it for a petrol engine and were too tight to change the little orange light in the diesel one. Only petrol engines need a choke, diesels use glow plugs. One other feature of the 19J engine is when you use the glow plugs, give it plenty of heat in...

    Automatic choke stuck on

It's a glow plug light, you certaily haven't got any choke (manual or automatic) on a 19J 2.5TD. It should operate on the ignition switch just past the 2nd position, ie turn key to 2nd position and just a little further but not far enough to actually start the engine. If it's staying on, it's an...

    Fire Extinguisher

WE have 6kg extinguishers in the cab of petrol tankers, I always say there just the right size for hitting people out of the feckin' way as you're running:D

    I have a TD engine...

I've got one, 'cos I can't afford anything better. Goes well, starts (with lots of heat) if you ask it nicely, doesn't lose or burn oil and potters along quite nicely at 65. I have had more out of it (70plus) and I got the teethmarks on the steering wheel to prove it! Handles like a feckin' boat:D

    heater blower fault

I haven't got a Freelander, but I had a similar problem with a Rover 45 I once owned. It was the resistors gone, however I think what caused them to go was a fan on it's last legs that was seizing up. They rely on air flow over them to keep cool (relatively). If it's only the resistors you...

What have you done to your Landie today.

Fitted my new (slightly used) rear vents courtesy of BlueHaze (Thanks bud). Before any one says, yes I know they'll leak like buggery, but they look pretty and tbh the amount of water they'll let in is the least of my worries!!

    Wilkinsons oil

I'm certainly not implying that all oils are the same, what I meant was that if the oil meets or exceeds the spec then it's perfectly good for that engine. If one oil is much "better" than another, how many people will change the service interval to suit? As I said, the yearly changes I do...

    Wilkinsons oil

I use Smith & Allan 10w40 semi-synthetic in all my vehicles 'cos It's only around £47 delivered for 20L. They advertise on fleabay and are independent oil blenders. The vehicles it goes in are:- The 2.5TD LR - changed yearly (approx 3000 miles) Honda Pan Euro ST1100 bike - changed every 2-3...

    fuel brands

Cherry or Gas oil to give it it's proper name was roughly 1000ppm sulphur content. recent legislation says that gas oil must come down to 10ppm sulphur which is the same as standard road diesel. The terminal I work out of has recently converted to this, though how many others have I couldn't...

UK bio-unleaded has 5% ethanol. In Some Euro countries (eg France) bio-unleaded has 10% ethanol. The proposal is that by 2013 UK bio-unleaded has 10%. Also strange to note that normally when a new additive / formula comes on the market, the oil companies shout it from the rooftops. With...

    fuel brands

As far as I'm aware, Tesco buy additised fuel from the majors. I was surprised when I was told this as I thought they wouldn't / couldn't. Certainly most small companies have unadditised fuels and yes that is controlled by the key or card system. Majors do indeed take from each others...

Supermarkets generally buy from the majors (Shell, Chevron, Esso etc) and take from their terminals. The fuel for the major supermarkets will include the additives and is in fact no different. ps I'm a tanker driver:)

    Insurance Co thieves

I got a quote that I couldn't believe from those nice meerkats. So I tried it online and guess what - "sorry but you need to speak to an advisor". They called me next day and I strapped myself in preparing to be shafted. The young lady I spoke to was very nice and guided through the questions...
