Disco 1 Radius arm bush replacement

Have you considered doing the job yourself? It can be done via a "bush fix" method so could save you money and you would only have to remove one at once. I have done both mine at once as I changed an axle case. However, when I changed my axle case my steering went slightly out of alignment (off...

Rear brake locking after new brakes.

I will have a look at mine today and assess if I can add a safety feature. I could potentially add a swing down tab that covers the lever to prevent lifting inadvertently, but I will need to look at if its possible first. I am always careful and mindful of the position of the lever, but then...

Rear brake locking after new brakes.

I do use these as they are all I have and didn't know there was an issue with them. Are they known to fail and if so, how? I really don't want to be using stands that have a risk of failure. I would normally leave the jack in place at the side of the stand, but these photos are from when I did...

    Swivel Ball seal replacement

Wow, that looked hard work. To be fair, if you intend to keep the truck, replacing worn gear is an investment. When I did my swivels I ended up changing one stub axle, both calipers and discs (though I got a deal on a set of calipers and discs that were vented so went for those), quality wheel...

    Swivel Ball seal replacement

Belt and braces is a good option! None of us want our trucks coming down, even if not under it. Even when I use axle stands I leave the jack in position (with the pressure off) just in case.

    Overheating 1989 Defender Turbo Diesel

I have had two land rovers (older ones) and the rads looked OK, but touch the fins and they turned to dust. Changed the rad on each of them and it made a significant difference.

    Swivel Ball seal replacement

With the socket, try it on and feel the fit of it. The quality of the socket makes a difference. I had tired bolts on my brake calipers and the tightest fit was a 13mm quality socket. Unfortunately my bolts were beyond undoing with a socket. I ended up having to remove mine with one of the nut...

    Swivel Ball seal replacement

Also remember that if you are removing the calipers then those bolts will be coming out too, so perhaps get some replacements for those.

Driveway Protection Hacks - Found any?

The old rubber backed mats you get in business receptions etc. Rubber backed, carpet like top so oil doesn't just run off, and hard wearing so if you drive over it it's not an issue. Also if you do get some oil on the drive, sprinkle some soda crystals on the oil. It absorbs it if you are...

    Swivel Ball seal replacement

I think it's a 14mm 12 point. I used an aviation spanner to start them going. I then used a ratchet spanner but make sure you get a reversible one as if you undo it too far you won't be able to get the spanner off! You have to undo them all a little bit at a time as the screw head comes too far...

    Defender nut and bolt rebuild

Wow, I am envious of your work! Some fantastic effort going in there and great attention to detail. I take it a galvanised chassis will be going on? A well deserved pat on the back 👏

    90/ discovery front axle swapping

Whilst you may be able to use the callipers from your existing axle, use the bolts from the axle/swivel housing you are going to use. I had an issue when I did my axle as one calliper was stuck and very old, the other relatively new as it had obviously been replaced in the past. The calliper...

    90/ discovery front axle swapping

I refurbished my front axle last year and I will give you notes from my swap. Mine was a 10 spline axle, so I believe a 200 tdi. My original upgrade was change the swivel chalice and bits. The swivel axle case required the Railko bush type. I changed my front brakes to vented as I got them at a...

    Torque wrench calibration

I bought a cheap aldi torque wrench. Should have been £20 but reduced to £15. Works well and has a calibration certificate. Would I buy another? - well I did so I can keep one in the car and one in the tool box (I have the one in the car to also use as a wheel brace so couldn't afford to forget...
