Spacers fek up everything, as the axles are not designed to take them and the huge amout of extra, unwarranted stress generated by the offset. The stub axle was probably sitting inside the spacen which transferred all of the stresses to the ball casing.

With the one piece flanged halfshaft there is no 'in-out' motion at the hub, whereas with the two-piece, there is an allowance made which allows the halfshaft to 'float' a few thou. I wuldn't think that there would be any detrimental effect by using either, especially as it will be the halfshaft...
