    Modus Operandi for rescues ...

There'll always be those who have been careful and it's still gone wrong. Whether its that a failed recovery has led to 2 vehicles becoming stuck, whether its that road conditions have deteriorated, or a technical failure. There will be those who are reckless and have got themselves into a...

I assumed it was a driveable farm track, perhaps a bit wet and icy. There was mention of an "incline". There was no mention that it was very steep. There was no mention of the steep drop off to the side. The loose terrain. Or the scratchy access. As I said upthread, i'm always willing to...

    Modus Operandi for rescues ...

I have, in the past, managed a callout based emergency response service. Somewhat different to what we're doing here (trained volunteers, no "Public" callout facility (calls were via utility companies or emergency services), etc. But i think there are key things that could translate across to...

A huge issue here is the OP's original request. The impression given was that this would be an easy rescue on good terrain. Had I seen the post originally i'd have offered to help. Whilst a photo might not always be practical due to mobile signal, in this case it would have allowed LZIR...

the location on here doesn't make sense (A4065 is nowhere near Swansea / Brecon - it's a bypass near Bridgend) so guessing either 4067 or 465. ?

Do we have any pics or more details? - some photos of how the vehicles are stuck and the terrain might allow the collective team here to share ideas on how best to get them out....

    stuck

Just seen the latest post. Happy to help but wouldn't be until the morning (seasonal alcohol related issues). However, really depends whether a standard 4x4 would be any use in the situation - don't have a winch etc.

Is it a bad thing if people are coming asking for help? It's up to each of us whether or not we choose to help. Personally I'm not interested what car they're driving, or whether they're a regular contributor to the forum - if I can help someone in need I will. I'd like to think that if any of...

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

You do seem a little obsessed with speed. Yes speed is involved in a lot of accidents but its rarely the only cause. I fully agree that we should pour more scorn onto general bad driving - but its possible to drive fast well. In fact, its often slower drivers that lack decent lane discipline...

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

Maybe not on ice (although anyone driving at 90mph on ice needs shooting), but tyres have got better at more normal conditions - e.g. wet roads.

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

Or we make the driving test harder. Yes there's a cost, but probably not as great as the cost to the economy as adding journey times to everyone's day. Personally i think there should be a 3 stage driving test: 1. Before the learner is even allowed to go out on the road, a "CBT" type test on...

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

True. Although cars now seem to be trying to make up for the human body's failings. The last few hire cars i've driven have all sorts of sensors to brake in the event of a hazard.

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

I suspect at the time the limits were introduced, france had less congested roads than us? As modern cars have got better, with better brakes, limits haven't increased unfortunately. The german autobahns didnt feel particularly unsafe - although the speed differential between lorries at 60...

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

harsh Are you suggesting we should all pootle around at <50mph the whole time because its safer whilst the country grinds to a halt simply because its marginally safer? Maybe we should never leave the house at all?

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

Very true There's also the minor point that some people actually enjoy driving, rather than just seeing driving as a chore. In all honesty i avoid motorways (boring) if i've got time to take the B roads - but then i'd actually like to be able to drive the B roads at a speed that is enjoyable...

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

I do a lot of my mileage late in the evenings so generally no congested areas. I'm sure you're right about the maths during rush hour! However (and i realise this is drifting away from the motorways somewhat). This morning i drove from Whitchurch to Llangollen and it took me ages as i was...

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

I have to admit i'm not normally *that* worried abot burning a bit of extra fuel. Guess it comes from previous years driving company cars where i wasnt paying for the fuel, but where my time was under a lot of pressure. I used to do around 25000 miles per year. And i'll admit that back then a...

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

Guess it depends on the age of the sprinter - but the new ones cruise quite happily somewhere significantly above the motorway speed limit (presumably designed for the autobahns) Yes 60-70 makes little difference. But 40-70 does. And the idiots driving through the lanes at 30mph where 60...

Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

No - i didnt own the defender (I did own a 300tdi disco at the time), however I was travelling in convoy with the owner of the defender (he was driving a hire van at the time) I've since driven many newer (tdci) defenders and those certainly have no issue keeping up with motorway traffic...
