Managed to pick up my two side frames and other bits from the painter today. Nice to see them with a coat of paint! I also dropped off the bonnet, so hopefully that will be done before I finish up for holidays 😀.

Made a bit of progress on the bonnet at last. Been busy with other stuff, so glad to be getting this done. I finished welding the frame to make it solid again. Put a light skim of aluminised filler to tidy up some bits, which is stronger and more resistant to cracking just because bonnets tend...

I broke the welder out and got stuck in. I haven’t buffed the welds all the way down as they won’t be seen and it’s not an MOT repair. It just needs to be solid and cosmetically tidy enough 😀. Just got a couple of more pin holes to sort out, tidy it up with a little filler, prime, paint and refit.

After examination, the inner frame was better than I thought it would be, but it’s still a bit frilly!

Moving on to the bonnet, after stripping the paint using paint stripper, there was still a lot of paint residue which needed removing. I used a 120 grit disc on a DA and it came off fairly easy. Unfortunately, the rivets prevented me cleaning all the paint round them and I didn’t want to leave...

Managed to finally spend some time on the Landy today . Thought I would see if I could finish the prep work on the side frames. Did some rubbing down and filling to get them to a reasonable standard. Im going to take them to the painter next week, so wanted to get them done for that 😅

I’m going to be controversial here, but in my opinion, I think the Grenadier is what the new defender should have been. I can’t deny the defender is a top product, but it’s no longer the workhorse the old one was. It shows that JLR are pushing their products further upmarket and further away...

I finally finished off the drivers side sill and post assembly today. I decided to bolt up the rear of the sill rail and fix the front to the bulkhead before welding. I didn’t do that on the other side but i’m confident it will fit fine 🧐😀. The next job is to finish prepping them for paint.

I think, to be honest, that’s probably the way I would go if I was going to do it again, despite the extra cost. I have done it this way to try and save some cash, but the finish would be so much better using pre-fabricated brand new components!
